Title: Predestination

1
Predestination
  • What does Scripture say?

2
Verses Supporting Predestination
3
Matthew 2214
  • For many are called, but few are chosen.

Jesus says God calls many people. Why are some
not chosen? Is there something on an individuals
part that must be done to be chosen?
4
Luke 1020-22
  • 20"Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the
spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your
    names are recorded in heaven."
  • 21At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the
Holy Spirit, and said, "I praise You, O Father,
Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden
these things from the wise and intelligent and
have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for
this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
  • 22"All things have been handed over to Me by My
Father, and no one knows who the Son is except
the Father, and who the Father is except the Son,
and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."

We can only know God if Jesus chooses to reveal
Him to us. Who does the Bible indicate that Jesus
will reveal the Father to?
5
Romans 916-18
  • 16It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire
or effort, but on God's mercy. 17For the
Scripture says to Pharaoh "I raised you up for
this very purpose, that I might display my power
in you and that my name might be proclaimed in
all the earth. 18Therefore God has mercy on whom
he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he
    wants to harden.

God is sovereign. He hardened Pharaoh and others.
Does the Bible indicate who God wants to have
mercy on? Can we get an idea of how many He truly
wants to save now?
6
Ephesians 14-6
  • For he chose us in him before the creation of
the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
In love he predestined us to be adopted as his
sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his
pleasure and will 6to the praise of his glorious
grace, which he has freely given us in the One he
    loves.

God predestines us before the beginning of time.
Two questions 1) Does God limit predestination,
does he want only an elect few to be saved? or 2)
Does God want everyone to be saved? What do other
Scriptures say?

Verses Clarifying Predestination
8
John 639-40
  • 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that
I shall lose none of all that he has given me,
but raise them up at the last day. 40For my
Father's will is that everyone who looks to the
Son and believes in him shall have eternal life,
and I will raise him up at the last day."

Jesus says that the ones given to him are the
same as those who believe. His will is that
everyone who believes in Jesus will be saved.
9
Romans 828-30
  • 28And we know that in all things God works for
the good of those who love him, who have been
called according to his purpose. 29For those God
foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to
the likeness of his Son, that he might be the
firstborn among many brothers. 30And those he
predestined, he also called those he called, he
also justified those he justified, he also
    glorified.

God predestines those he foreknew. What did he
foreknow about them?
10
Ephesians 111-13
  • 11In him we were also chosen, having been
predestined according to the plan of him who
works out everything in conformity with the
purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were
the first to hope in Christ, might be for the
praise of his glory. 13And you also were included
in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you
were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy
    Spirit,

We are predestined according to a plan. Paul
notes part of this plan is that we hope, hear,
and believe. Those who believe are the ones who
are predestined. God foreknows them.
11
Ephesians 28-9
  • 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faithand this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God 9not by works, so that no one can
    boast.

We can do nothing to earn our salvation. Still it
our God-enabled faith that opens the door to this
gift.
12
1 Peter 11-2
  • 1To God's elect, strangers in the world,
    scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia,
Asia and Bithynia, 2who have been chosen
according to the foreknowledge of God the Father,

We are chosen through foreknowledge.
13
God Wants Everyone to be Saved
14
John 1232
  • 32But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will
    draw all men to myself."

Jesus will draw all men and women to himself.
15
Romans 518
  • So then as through one transgression there
resulted condemnation to all men, even so through
one act of righteousness there resulted
justification of life to all men.

Jesus' sacrifice was made for everyone.
16
Romans 1013-15
  • 13for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the
    Lord will be saved."
  • 14How, then, can they call on the one they have
not believed in? And how can they believe in the
one of whom they have not heard? And how can they
hear without someone preaching to them? 15And how
can they preach unless they are sent? As it is
written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who
    bring good news!"

Everyone who calls on Jesus will be saved. God
desires everyone to be saved. He calls us to
preach and so they can hear and believe.
17
1 Timothy 23-4
  • 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who
wants all men to be saved and to come to a
    knowledge of the truth

Plain and simple. God wants everyone to be saved.

18
2 Peter 39
  • 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as
some understand slowness. He is patient with you,
not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to
    come to repentance.

Plain and simple. God does not want anyone to
perish.
19
Verses that Warn Against Falling Away
20
Hebrews 64-5
  • 4It is impossible for those who have once been
enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift,
who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5who have
tasted the goodness of the word of God and the
powers of the coming age, 6if they fall away, to
be brought back to repentance, because to their
loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over
again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

21
Hebrews 1026-27
  • 26If we deliberately keep on sinning after we
have received the knowledge of the truth, no
sacrifice for sins is left, 27but only a fearful
expectation of judgment and of raging fire that
will consume the enemies of God.

22
2 Peter 220-21
  • 20If they have escaped the corruption of the
world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
and are again entangled in it and overcome, they
are worse off at the end than they were at the
beginning. 21It would have been better for them
not to have known the way of righteousness, than
to have known it and then to turn their backs on
the sacred command that was passed on to them.

23
Revelation 35
  • He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in
white. I will never blot out his name from the
book of life, but will acknowledge his name
before my Father and his angels.

24
Our Hope Assurance in Christ
25
John 316
  • 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his
one and only Son, that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.

Whoever believes in Jesus will be saved.
26
Romans 837-39
  • 37No, in all these things we are more than
conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the
future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be
able to separate us from the love of God that is
    in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Nothing can separate us from Gods love.
27
Philippians 212-13
  • 12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always
obeyednot only in my presence, but now much more
in my absencecontinue to work out your salvation
with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who
works in you to will and to act according to his
    good purpose.

God gives us the ability to believe and obey. We
must work with Him in our salvation. Remember He
wants everyone to be saved.
28
2 Timothy 211-13
  • 11Here is a trustworthy saying
  • If we died with him,
  • we will also live with him
  • 12if we endure,
  • we will also reign with him.
  • If we disown him,
  • he will also disown us
  • 13if we are faithless,
  • he will remain faithful,
  • for he cannot disown himself.

Jesus remains faithful even when we sin. We can
be sure of our salvation and confident that He
will save us.
29
1 John 19
  • 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just
and will forgive us our sins and purify us from
    all unrighteousness.

God forgives our sins.
30
1 John 39
  • 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin,
because God's seed remains in him he cannot go
on sinning, because he has been born of God.

God will finish His work within us.
