Title: Is it possible that earthly life came from outer space

1
Is it possible that earthly life came from outer
space?
2
A Bit of (probable) History
  • More than 4 billion yrs ago a cloud of
interstellar gas collapses to create the Sun and
    the planets.
  • About 4.5 yrs ago Earth created.
  • The moon possibly a chunk of earth blown off
with a collision with a very large planetary
    object.
  • There are rocks dating 3.9 billion yrs ago that
have isotopic fingerprints of organic carbon.
  • Microfossils in rocks dating 3.5 billion yrs
ago a sign of flourishing life.

3
Water in Space
  • The most common ones Ordinary Chondrites-
    contain 0.1 water
  • Asteroids from the asteroid belt contain up to
    20 water.
  • Comets half ice, half dust. The water and the
dust contain high percent of deuterium.

4
The Origins of Water on Earth
  • ?

Your guess is probably as good as any other
5
Meteorite Showers The Heavy Bombardment Period
6
The Beginning of Life the creation of organic
molecules.
  • Miller created the presumed primeval earths
    atmosphere in a flask.
  • hot springs in the bottom of the ocean.
  • Space.

7
The Asteroid
  • Comets Dust particles from comets contain up to
50 organic carbon, 10 on average.
  • Asteroids mostly metal and rock. Some contain
many organic compounds, including 70 amino acids.
A little more Ls than Ds.
  • Organic molecules exist in interstellar dust.

8
Did Organic Raw Material Come From Space?
  • Even if they did, their origin is unclear.

9
A meteorite crash
  • The rear part of the comet is much cooler than
the front which means it could arrive as liquid
    water with organic compounds.

10
The light gas gun
11
From a.a. to peptide
Liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry of the
aas and peptides.
12
ALH84001
  • 1.94kg
  • Made of Silicate rich rock
  • Has Carbonate minerals assemblages, 1-500µm,
created in bacteria friendly temperatures on the
    surface of Mars.

13
The magnetite crystal
  • Magnetite Fe3O4
  • The inner and outer rim of the core are composed
of tens of magnetite crystals in Mg and Fe rich
    carbonate matrix.

14
Magnetotactic bacteria
  • Live in sediments of many freshwater marine
    habitats
  • When put in a magnetic field, magnetotactic
bacteria move along the field lines and
    concentrate in the north

15
The magnetosome
16
The Crystal Structure
  • These crystals are a biological marker there is
no known way other than biological to create them
    so perfectly.

17
What is Life?
  • Is Life inevitably dependant on water?
  • Is life always organic compounds?
  • What differs something alive from not alive?
