6. Weighted Averages
  • We already saw this happening in an early
    exploration.
  • What is your GPA if you have the following
grades, given that an A4, B3, C2 and so on?
  • Math A 3 credits
  • English B 3 credits
  • Biology C 3 credits
  • Education A 3 credits

What happens now?
  • Math A 4 credits
  • English B 4 credits

5
What do we need to get to achieve at least a 3.0?
  • Math A 4 credits
  • English ? 4 credits
  • Biology C 3 credits
  • Education B 3 credits

6
7.3
  • The lottery is a tax on people who dont know
    math

7
1. Where do we see probability and chance? How do
we talk about it?
8
2. Definitions
  • Random Phenomena
  • Phenomena that are unpredictable individually,
but that have patterns when considered as a group
    or over a long run.
  • Outcome
  • An outcome is the result of an experiment or
    other situation involving uncertainty.
  • The set of all possible outcomes of a probability
experiment is called a sample space.
  • Sample Space
  • The sample space is an exhaustive list of all the
possible outcomes of an experiment. Each possible
result of such a study is represented by one and
only one point in the sample space.
  • Event
  • An event is any collection of outcomes of an
    experiment.
  • Formally, any subset of the sample space is an
    event.
  • Any event which consists of a single outcome in
the sample space is called an elementary or
simple event. Events which consist of more than
one outcome are called compound events.

9
  • Impossible Events Probability of ______
  • Certain Events Probability of _________

10
3. Whats the probability of selecting the Queen
of Hearts from a deck of cards?
  • What does probability mean?

11
If were looking at equally likely
  • P(E)(number of favorable outcomes)/(number of
    total outcomes)

12
4. Not Equally Likely
  • What is the probability of getting an odd number?

2
1
3
4
13
5. Whats the probability of getting 2 heads in a
row.
  • How could we determine this answer?
  • Any guesses?

14
Law of Large Numbers
  • With a partner, toss the coin twice. Place a 1
in the heads or tails column, depending on which
    one you got.
  • Worksheet
  • What did we get? (this is called the experimental
    probability, or the empirical probability)

15
Other Methods1. Be systematic and look for
patterns
16
2. Tree diagram
17
Lets go crazy with our tree diagram. Whats the
probability of rolling 4H in a row?
  • What operation are we seeing here?

18
What about 2H2T? (Order doesnt matter)
19
If we have time, well do the lady and the tiger.
