Using annual aerial detection surveys (ADS), the
Forest Service Forest Health Monitoring Program
monitors forests and detects changes due to
insects, disease or weather-related damage.

Potential MODIS Direct Readout Application
Preliminary results in western Washington show
how a MODIS forest disturbance assessment relates
to insect impacted areas. Direct readout-based
disturbance monitoring could be used to
prioritize aerial detection survey (ADS) flights
for areas of suspected forest damage.
