  • (Radio) Luminous Galactic/Sag Dwarf PNe
  • New RC PNe from MCs
  • Physics of the MCs RC PNe
  • Future work

3
Radio-continuum MCs
4
The one idea I want you to take home with you
We do not listen to Radio Data
5
Radio-continuum MCs
  • New generation of Mosaic surveys
  • ATCA (20,13, 6 and 3 cm)
  • SUMSS (843 MHz (35cm))
  • rms gt 0.5 mJy (3sgt1.5mJy)
  • Resolution gt15 arcsec and lt45 arcsec
  • Point source catalogue
  • LMC 2000
  • SMC 750
  • gt95 background objects (AGN, quasars)

6
Radio-continuum LMCs
? 6 cm
20 cm ?
Hughes et al. (2008)
7
Radio-continuum SMCs
? 13 cm
6 cm ?
Crawford et al. (2009)
8
Luminous Galactic Sag Dwarf PNe
  • Galactic PNe
  • G313.300.3 (Cohen et al. 2004) Slmc0.6 mJy
    (20cm)
  • NGC7027 (Zijlstra et al. 2008) Slmc1.5 mJy (6cm)
  • NGC6302 (Gomez et al. 1993) Slmc3.5 mJy
    Ssmc2.4 mJy (6cm)
  • Sagittarius Dwarf
  • 2 PNe? Dudziak et al. 2000
  • Very bright! ATCA S4mJy (in LMC S2.5 mJy)
  • LMC
  • Zijlstra et al. 1994
  • ATCA SMP L58
  • at 6/3cm with S1.1/0.5 mJy

9
Multi Frequency MCs
  • Confusion with compact HII regions
  • Optical
  • Spectroscopy
  • Imaging (MCELS)
  • IR
  • IRAS
  • SPITZER (SAGE)
  • X-ray
  • ROSAT
  • XMM Chandra

10
The MCs PNe Optical Detections
  • LMC
  • 280 (Leisy et al. 97)
  • 629 RP2006
  • Total 900
  • SMC
  • 139
  • Morgan 1995
  • Jacoby De Marco 2002

MCELS (Winkler et al.)
11
MCs RC PNe
  • 5 RC PNe in the SMC (JD 04, SMP S11, SMP S17, JD
    26 and N S68)
  • 12 RC PNe in the LMC (SMP L8,25,33,39,47,48,62,74,
    75,83,84 and 89)
  • All within 2 (Optical-radio-IR) and above 3s

12
MC RC PNe
  • Spectral index is all-around the place
    -0.7ltalt0.4
  • The SMC PNe sample significantly more luminous
    (S5mJy)
  • 11 LMC RC PNe are confirmed with HST with
diameters from very small (0.08 pc or 0.33'' SMP
L75) to very large (1 pc or 4'' SMP L83)
  • MIR/RC ratio is 92 (MW 61)
  • 11 RP06 PNe reclassified

13
Physics of the MCs RC PNe
  • 4 RC PNe in the MCs vs 70 in the MW
  • 3-5 times more luminous then in the MW
  • More massive (10) then in the MW
  • M(cs)lmc0.65? (Villaver et al. 2007)
  • M(cs17) 2-5 M? (Payne et al. 2008)
  • missing mass problem (Kwok 1994)
  • Thermal vs non-thermal emission?
  • Super PNe or Mini SNRs?

14
Physics of the MCs RC PNe
The radio surface brightness to diameter (S -
D) (Vukotic et al. 2009) The MC RC PNe sample
is tip of the iceberg of the actual luminosity
function
15
Future directions
  • Deeper ATCA observations (res1 and rms0.1mJy)
  • SKA (REVOLUTION!)
  • Wider frequency coverage (especially low end)
  • More resolution
  • More sensitivity
  • More HST follow-ups
  • More Spitzer follow-ups
  • Multi-frequency comparison
