Nuclear Family
  • A family unit that consists of parents and their
    young children, all living under the same roof.
  • Example Mother, Father, Son, and Daughter.

Extended Family
  • This family includes a nuclear family but also
    includes relatives to whom you are related by
    blood ties.
  • Example Mother, Father, Son, Daughter,
    Grandmother.

Matrilineal Family
  • Basis of Iroquois society.
  • The family traced its descent from the Mother.
  • All Iroquois belonged to their Mothers family.
  • All Daughters stayed with Mother even after
    Married.
  • All possessions and gifts were passed through the
    female line. Daughters inherited from their
    Mothers.

Patrilineal Family
  • Family traced through Father.
  • Most Indian cultures like the Algonkians were
    Patrilineal.
  • For Algonkians the head of family was the oldest,
    most able Male.
  • For the Iroquois, the Males left the family once
    they married into a New family.
