ÜNAK
  • University and Research Librarians
    Association,
  • ÜNAK in short (by abbreviating its Turkish name),
  • was founded in the year 1991, with headquarters
    in Ankara.
  • It is a non-profit organisation.

THE GOALS OF ÜNAK
  • In the ÜNAK-Charter the goals of the Association
    were briefly stated as follows
  • Investigating the problems faced by the
    university and research libraries, documentation
    and information centres in relation to todays
    rapidly changing and advancing technologies
  • making international comparisons of similar
    problems and solutions

  • also examining and providing solutions to various
    problems of human resources working in
    information centres
  • planning and conducting activities especially
    concerning the implementation of new
    technologies
  • in short, taking the steps to render the
    mentioned information centres compatible in their
    functioning with the contemporary concepts of
    library science.

FIELDS OF ACTIVITY OF ÜNAK
  • Major fields of activity of ÜNAK can be
    exemplified as follows
  • Organising education and training activities in
    forms of conferences, seminars, workshops and
    symposia with the main aim to provide
    professional advancement to library and
    information personnel.
  • Preparing and publishing authentic and translated
    books and periodicals with the aim of especially
    reflecting new developments in library and
    information sciences.

FIELDS OF ACTIVITY OF ÜNAK
  • Implementing projects, and also encouraging and
    supporting original research in the topics of
    interest of the Associations main fields of
    activity.
  • Securing and supporting professional solidarity,
    in the sense to contribute solutions of problems,
    and providing consultancy and arbitration
    services.
  • Collaborating with organisations having similar
    goals.

MEMBERSHIP OF ÜNAK
  • ÜNAK number of members had been increased to 630.
  • Apart from the rules for a usual membership to an
    association in Turkey,
  • the members should have been graduated from
    undergraduate programs of higher education at
    university level, and/or working or having been
    worked in libraries, information centres etc. or
    University Departments of Librarianship,
    Information and Documentation Management and the
    like.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES ORGANISED BY ÜNAK
  • Most important scientific activities being
    organised by ÜNAK are
  • BLISS Meeting (to be held on yearly basis)
  • ÜNAK/OCLC Meeting (again on yearly basis)
  • ÜNAK Yearly General Meeting
  • Education and training programs
  • Union Catalogue Project

ÜNAK/OCLC CONSORTIUM
  • Ohio College Library Centre (OCLC) was founded in
    1967, and then after renaming in 1981 as Online
    Computer Library Centre, became
  • an international information-documentation
    provision/distribution/sharing centre to which
    60.000 libraries of 112 countries are subscribed
    nowadays.
  • On November 2000 the formation was formally
    established, and transformed into a consortium.

UNION CATALOGUE PROJECT
  • These activities were initiated by OCLC in 2001.
  • In 2004, the project was presented to the
    Turkish National Academic Information Centre
    (ULAKBIM).
  • In 2005 ULAKBIM undertook the software section.
  • In 2006, activities were initiated by the
    Ministry of Culture within the scope of an
    e-Government project.
  • ÜNAK has primarily advisory roles in the projects.

GUIDE FOR TURKISH INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION
CENTRES
  • The main purpose of starting with the guide was
    to bring together quite a necessary information
    of Turkish information and documentation centres
    and make electronic accessibility possible
    through a common database, pursuing therewith the
    following aims
  • Identifying the Turkish Information Centres in
    terms of collection, personnel and services
    supplied, as well as the appropriate conditions
    for possible cooperation.
  • Presenting the contact information, and rules and
    systems of information centres,
  • Thus forming a basis for scientific studies in
    the field of librarianship, which also includes
    support in current and statistical information.

WHOS WHO IN TURKISH LIBRARIANSHIP
  • With the primary aims of
  • promoting colleagues working in Information and
    Documentation Centres, by presenting their
    qualifications and contact information,
  • for the sake of developing cooperative efforts
    and sound assistance for research and other
    studies,
  • and hence to strengthen communication,
  • and also to identify the characteristics of
    Turkish labour force in this field.
  • ÜNAK initiated and proceeds onwards with Whos
    who in Turkish librarianship? to introduce the
    necessary biographical information.

THE PERIODICAL INFORMATION WORLD (BILGI DÜNYASI)
  • Information World is going to be regularly
    published twice a year. It contains authentic
    articles, opinion papers and book reviews (along
    with professional news and professional meeting
    announcements), both in Turkish and in English.
  • The articles to appear in the learned journal
    should reflect original research work in the
    areas of information science, documentation,
    librarianship and allied disciplines. It would
    also be desirable to gain articles upon
    investigations concerning recent innovations in
    the realm of the rapid technological change in
    the fields of information science.

ÜNAK MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES WORKING GROUP
  • Medicine and Health Services Working Group in
    affiliation with ÜNAK started in 2000. Its aims
    can be subsumed as follows
  • Contributing to the development and availability
    of medical information,
  • Supporting a handbook on medical information,
  • Organising meetings in Turkey, with the primary
    goal of contributing the advancement of Turkish
    medical librarianship,
  • Contributing to the standardisation of Turkish
    medical science terminology,
  • Supporting activities of publication in the
    field,
  • Preparing and promoting projects on the efficient
    availability of medical information.

TURKISH PLATFORM OF LAW LIBRARIANS
  • Turkish Platform of Law Librarians was
    established in 2007. The platform works according
    to the rules and regulations of ÜNAK (University
    and Research Librarians Association) The
    objectives of the Turkish Platform of Law
    Librarians can be expressed as follows
  • To increase the cooperation and information
    sharing between the libraries of Turkey that
    serve for the field of law.
  • To announce and arrange panels and workshops in
    the annual meetings of ÜNAK.
  • To enable international contacts and sharing
    comprising advancements in law and legal
    documentation.
  • To pioneer a Turkish database of law, owing to
    international standards.
  • To support the actions concerning the
    institutional archives of law and open access.

  • ÜNAK launched Young ÜNAK formation within the
    year 2007. The mission and vision of Young ÜNAK
    can be summarised as follows
  • Mission Increasing the level of cooperation and
    establishing lively communication among the
    students of Librarianship, Documentation and
    Information Management.
  • Vision With the support of ÜNAK, paving the way
    for the voices, ideas and thoughts of students of
    Librarianship, Documentation and Information

  • Providing material support to successful
    students, in form of scholarships and in various
    means of research activity finance.
  • Assisting young individuals in finding employment
    relevant to their fields of graduation.
