Where Does It All Come From?
With the exception of hydrogen, all elements are
formed in stars.
9
Where Does It All Come From?
Stars like our sun spend most of their lives
converting hydrogen to helium.
This lasts 1 million 200 billion years (smaller
stars last longer).
10
Where Does It All Come From?
Stars like the sun eventually form several light
elements before burning out and forming a nebula.
This will eventually happen to the sun.
11
Where Does It All Come From?
Very heavy stars explode when they die out! The
explosion takes only a fraction of a second, but
all the elements heavier than iron are created in
that instant!
12
How Science Works
Make lots of observations
Negative results? New hypothesis!
Positive results?
13
Vocabulary Time!
  • Hypothesis a tentative explanation for
    something we see

In order to be any good, a hypothesis must make a
prediction we can test (so we can try to prove
the hypothesis wrong)
  • Theory an explanation that has been tested
    successfully many, many times

A theory must explain many different phenomena
14
Scientific Laws
  • No such thing! Sort of.
  • The Law of Conservation of Mass matter cant be
created or destroyed. Instead, it just changes
    form.

15
Types of Matter
Matter anything that has mass
