Fellowship of the Ring- part 5
Disc 2 The Bridge of Khazad-dum in Moria to
Fellowship characters reviewing gifts from
Galadriel they received (Scene 36-41) (1st 36
minutes-111 minutes)
The Lord of the Rings
1. What significance do you see in Gandalfs
(apparent) self-sacrifice when he falls? What
about the reaction of most of the Fellowship?
Which members specifically want to stop his
sacrifice? Try to think of any scenes in the
Bible like what you just saw in this scene.
Bible passage Hebrews 727 Bible passage
Romans 58 2. The Fellowship has trouble
accepting the loss of Gandalf. What insight can
we gain into ourselves from the various reactions
(the hobbits are inconsolable, Legolas Gimli
are in shock and maybe disbelief, Aragorn is
stoic--maybe in denial, and Boromir wants to give
everyone some time to heal). Where do you see
yourself in any of these characters
reactions? 3. Do you ever find yourself needing
to move on from something youd rather dwell on?
What forces you to keep going? What helps you
deal with such a situation? 4. Galadriels wood
elves are secretive and not very trusting, and
the movie sends out all sorts of negative vibes
in these scenes. Would you trust them, if they
werent willing to trust you? Why do you think
they are so untrusting? How do Christians ever
act like that, not trusting outsiders?

5. What do you take away from the scene in which
Galadriel is tempted to take the Ring from Frodo,
and we see a glimpse of how that might turn
out? 6. Galadriel doesnt seem to hold out a lot
of hope for Frodo his quest. Why does he keep
going, and what advice or helpful words does she
give him? How would you find her words or
actions helpful maybe you wouldnt find them
helpful? (to be a ring bearer is to be alone,
showing him she also bears a ring, etc.
etc.) Bible passage Isaiah 544,8 7. The elves
are singing a lament for Gandalf at one point
(asked what they are singing about Gandalf,
Legolas says I have not the heart to tell you
and Sam rhymes about his fireworks). If we
believe in eternal life, why are funerals such
sad affairs? Are we mourning the person, or our
own loss? What might happen if we treated
funerals as happy affairs? 8. What do you think
of Galadriels gifts? Which one would you want
to receive, and why? Gimli seems the most deeply
affected, but all he got were a few strands of
hair. What sense can you make of that?
