Commercial Collaboration By Channel
Reciprocate is our unique list exchange system
that is an outstanding success in the charity
sector. It was developed to maximise the
effectiveness of exchange mailings for
charities.Charities join the Reciprocate scheme
in order to recruit new donors through direct
mail. Charities exchange names that are profiled
to give the best swap results for targeting
donors.
13
Collaboration By Channel
  • What makes Reciprocate unique?
  • Charities in Reciprocate regularly achieve
response rates of between 5 and 15 on their
    reciprocal mailings.
  • Reciprocate taps straight into the donor pool
(people in the UK already supporting at least one
    charity).
  • Research of one charitys database has shown that
reciprocal recruits have the highest overall
lifetime value and are the most responsive
compared to other segments of their database.
  • Reciprocate reduces the hassle of organising your
    own list swaps
  • The cost of Reciprocate data is much lower than
    purchasing a cold list.
  • All the data held on Reciprocate is cleaned,
deduplicated, PAF matched and can be mailsorted
and coded to ensure 100 deliverability.

Collaboration With.
  • Umbrella Approaches (PFRA, Payroll Giving, Legacy
    Promotion, IOF Special Interest Groups)
  • Corporate Giving CSR Approaches
  • Mutual Trading Initiatives (Card Aid, Cards for
    Good Causes)
  • Foundations (Lloyds TSB, CAF Collaboration Fund)
  • PPPs
  • Other Non-Profits (Same or different cause?)
  • Commercial Approaches (Challenge Events, Face to
Face, Legacy Promotion, Internet Based Giving
    Schemes)

15
Umbrella Based Trading Collaborations
A Scottish environmental charity is to publish a
map of charity shops in Edinburgh that also
outlines the kind of donations each shop wants to
receive. The map is the latest manifestation of
the Generous City Project, a National
Lottery-funded collaboration of more than 35
Edinburgh charities that launched almost a year
ago to generate more charity shop donations.

Corporate Collaborations Success can Stifle
Multilateral Approaches
The woolly hat promotion initially involved both
Age Concern and another old people's charity,
ExtraCare. But because the initiative has swelled
in popularity, Innocent has decided to focus on
one partner. This year's collaboration has
increased massively. Age Concern supporters will
knit about 150,000 hats, with knitting circles
being formed to reach the target. Innocent will
drum up another 50,000 hats and, with 50p per
woollen-topped smoothie being donated to the
charity, it is hoped that 100,000 will be
raised.

Third Party Intermediaries Promote Fundraising
Collaboration
eBay for Charity is working with the Association
of Charity Shops to help charities make the most
of its online fundraising service. The two
organisations will hold an event on online
fundraising for association members in May as
part of a new six-month collaboration between the
bodies. eBay for Charity was launched in
November last year for Children in Need. More
than 350 charities have signed up, from large
bodies such as the RNLI, Oxfam and Cancer
Research UK, to small community organisations.
Charities wanting to sell goods on the site
have to register with MissionFish, a charity
specialising in online trading for charities.
Individuals can also sell items and donate part
or all of the final sale price.

Foundation Based Collaborations
"Some are collaborations of equals -
organisations of similar size that focus on
different issues. Others involve lead agencies
co-ordinating other agencies and others are
collaborations in which organisations that can't
afford to do a whole piece of work can come up
with a joint project that suits everyone. In the
past five years, we've funded just over 8m-worth
of projects, with an average grant of 43,000."
Linda Kelly, chief executive of the Lloyds TSB
Foundation.

Public Sector Support For Collaborative Working
Under the Better Together initiative, Marie Curie
nurses are to provide home care for chronic
heart failure patients referred to them by the
BHF. The project, an example of the kind of
public service joint working espoused by
ministers, has attracted funding from the
Department of Health and from local primary care
trusts in Poole and Bradford.

Some Key Final Thoughts
  • Why are each of the parties doing it?
  • How equitable is the collaboration?
  • Is the collaboration strategic or tactical in
    nature?
  • To what extent is there causal, mission and
values synergy between the parties to the
    collaboration?
  • What will be the impact on existing stakeholders?
  • Who will own what as a result of the
    collaboration?
  • What happens when it ends?
  • Can collaboration go further?
