Kjennskapen om at det var flere som øvde Falun
Gong enn det var medlemmer i Kommunistpartiet
skremte noen av landets toppledere. Som et
resultat ble de offisielle nyhetsbyråene i 1996
beordret om å begynne en propagandakampanje for å
gi Falun Gong dårlig rykte. Dessuten beordret det
offisielle sikkerhets-byrået i hemmelighet et
forbud mot Falun Gong. The fact that the number

of registered members of the communist party
frightened a few top leaders. As a result, in
1996, the official news agencies were ordered to
start a propaganda campaign to discredit Falun
Gong. Additionally, the public security bureau
secretly ordered the banning of Falun Gong.
Den 25 april 1999 samlet 10 000 Falun Gong
utøvere seg utenfor sentralregjeringens
bygningskompleks i Beijing. De krevde å få utøve
Falun Gong i en ikke-fiendtlig omgivelse.
Forsamlingen var ifølge politiet og
forbi-passerende ryddig og lovlig. På kvelden
gikk de alle rolig hjem. Samtidig bestemte
statsoverhodet Jiang Zemin seg for sterke
restriksjoner mot Falun Gong og andre grupper.
Landets ledere fordømte Falun Gong som en "ond
kult", og arrangerte offisielle kampanjer for å
utslette den. April 25, 1999, 10 000 Falun Gong
practitioners peacefully gathered outside the
central governments compound in Beijing. They
requested the right to practice Falun Gong in a
non-hostile environment. According to the police
and people passing by, this gathering was orderly
and lawful. In the evening, they all went home
quietly. At the same time the head of the state,
Jiang Zemin, decided for strong restrictions
against Falun Gong and other groups. Chinas
leaders condemned Falun Gong as an "evil cult"
and staged official campains to erase it.
