1. Yes/No Questions
Yes/No questions begin with modals or a form of
BE.
Does the student know the answer?
Can the customer pay the bill?
Is it going to rain today?
The correct answer is yes or no.

2. Where Questions
Where questions ask about the place.
Where did you live last year?
Where are you going now?
Where will you work in the future?
The answer can be just the place.
In Chicago.
To the mall.
In a bank.

3. When/What Time Questions
When questions ask about time.
When did you move here? Last year?
When can Trisha come over? Tonight?
What time asks for clock time.
What time did you start the exam?
At 10 oclock.

4. Why Questions
Why questions ask about the reason.
Why did you learn English?
Why is Erika taking your car?
The answer can begin with because.
Because I want to work in the USA.
Because her car isnt running.

5. Who/Whom Questions
Who asks about a subject.
Who took the book? (Tom took it.)
Whom can be used for the object of the verb, but
who is OK to use.
Jon Whom did you meet at the mall?
Pam I met Paul.

Which expresses choice when there are
alternatives.
Becky There are two notebook computers, so which
one do you want?
Josh Ill take the smaller one.

Whose asks about possession.
Tina Hey, I never saw that red shirt before.
Whose shirt is it?
Tonya Its my shirt. I bought it last night at
the discount mall.
Whos is a different word. It is a contraction
of who is.

How asks in what way or to what degree.

Sal I made it. Do you want one?
Sue Well, how good is it?
