Valium (Diazepam)
  • Uses
  • Anxiety
  • Alcohol Withdrawal
  • Controls Epilepsy
  • Relief of Muscle Spasms
  • Effective Sedation

3
Mechanisms of Action
  • Binds to stereospecific benzodiazapine receptors
on the postsynaptic GABA neuron at several sites
within the CNS, including the brain stem, and
    reticular formation.
  • Enhancement of the inhibitory effect of GABA on
    neuronal excitability results, by increased
neuronal membrane permeability to chloride ions.
This shift in chloride ions results in
hyperpolarization and stabilization of the cell.

4
Anectine (Succinylcholine chloride)
  • Uses
  • Muscle relaxation/Paralysis
  • Suppression of the twitch response
  • Facilitation of ET intubation (control of
    breathing during mechanical ventilation)

5
Mechanisms of Action
  • Imitates the action of Ach producing
depolarization of the motor end-plate at the
    myoneural junction, which causes sustained
    flaccid skeletal muscle paralysis.
  • Initially excites skeletal muscle by binding to
nicotinic receptors then prevents contraction by
prolonging the time during which the receptors at
the neuromuscular junction cannot respond to Ach.

6
Comparison
  • Both Valium and Anectine act on muscle cells.
  • Valium depresses the CNS whereas Anectine acts at
    the Neuromuscular junction, specifically at
    nicotinic receptors.
  • Valium has a long term effect and is used to
treat multiple conditions. It is also a graded
response and doesnt interfere with other muscle
functions. Anectine has the fastest onset of
action of all muscle relaxants but the effect is
only in the range of a few minutes. Anectine also
has a paralyzing effect on all skeletal muscles
    and is not graded.

7
  • Because Valium is a CNS depressant it can effect
your consciousness level, whereas Anectine has no
    effect on consciousness.
