Going on a Vision Quest
  • In order to know where you are going,
  • you need to know what you want and
  • where you want to go.

3
Lets do some exercises Goals and Mission
Statement
  • If you were granted and unlimited number of
wishes, what would be the top 5? Be specific as
    possible.

Write your own obituary.
What would you do if you had one week left to
live? What would you do? Where would you go? Who
would you visit? Who would accompany you? How
would your answers change if you had one year of
life left?

6 Steps for Securing your Goals
  • The must be stated in positive terms and in a way
you can achieve it yourself, regardless of the
    behaviors of others.
  • Make certain you know how you will know that you
have reached your goal (establish short and long
    term goals).
  • Describe your goals as specifically as you can.
  • Analyze if your goals are compatible.

5
Analysis of Goals - Compatibility
  • Approach-Approach Conflict Need to choose
    between good options
  • Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict Stuck between 2
    undesirable options (catch 22)
  • Approach-Avoidance Conflict Need to make a
choice and the prospects have a few positive and
negative aspects to them (pro-con analysis) (e.g.
    ideal job, but less )
  • Double Approach-Avoidance Conflict The options
    contain several positive/negative aspects (ideal
job more money but out of state away from
    friends/family)

6
6 Steps for Securing your Goals
  • Assess what you already have and what you are
going to need in order to reach your goals
  • Make a plan

Remember Reward yourself for progressing towards
your goal

The Benefits of Visualization
  • The benefits of visualization are endless,
    especially in sports psychology and
    rehabilitation psychology.
  • In 1969, The Richardson study tested 3 groups of
boys and their ability to make free throws on a
    basketball court.
  • Group 1-practiced shooting free throw
  • Group 2- did nothing for 2 weeks
  • Group 3-mentally rehearsed making free throws
  • All groups were retested.

8
Findings
  • No change in the group that did nothing for 2
    weeks (Group 2)
  • Group 1 (that practiced) improved by 24
  • Group 3 (visualized free throws practiced
    mentally) improved 23.

Similar findings have been found in medicine
(p.119-Reeves example).

When you find yourself trying to make sense of
life, think of these
  • Life is a mystery Life is a box of
chocolates, you never know what you are going to
    get

Life is uncertain so, cultivate an attitude of
gratitude
Everything is connected
Life is trouble
10
Think of these (cont)
  • Death is a great therapist the prospect of
death helps us analyze our life, actions, and
    priorities

Focus on the here and now
Are you getting what you want or what you are
suppose to wants? Your goals are your goals. Be
what you want to be not what others want you to
be.
Get comfortable with confusion
Love yourself
