Main Idea

• Esperanza had a rough time in Mexico, and it got
  worse when she moved to America.
• Esperanzas dad passed away.
• Her uncle had threatened her mother, because she
  would not marry him.
• Tio Luis, Esperanzas uncle, burnt down their
  home.
• Aubelita hurt her ankle.
• They moved away form Mexico to America.
• Esperanzas mother became ill.

Setting
Mexico

• In the book of Esperanza the setting changes.
  In the beginning Esperanza lives in Mexico on a
  grape farm, with a large house. Her life changes
  rapidly and is forced to move to America where
  she becomes a servant. While there she realizes
  life is much different. Conditions are quite
  bad little rainfall, and worst of all dust
  storms. They live in a small servants home
  without a bathroom, or hot water.

Characters

• Esperanza- Esperanza is a kind, brave person.
  She has changed much in the story. She goes from
  spoiled to being a common servant girl. Esperanza
  worries very much during her mothers illness and
  goes to work.
• Miguel- is a smart, brave, kind hearted person.
  In the story this servant boy helps Esperanza
  bring Aubileta to California after her injury.
• Mamma- is not a quitter , very brave, and very
  patient. Mamma has to help Esperanza realize life
  is not that bad in California. After her
  breakthrough with Esperanza mamma becomes very
  ill, and is put into a hospital.

• Papayas-Papa always ordered papayas for
  Esperanzas birthday. I think its a fruit but
  sweeter then most fruits. large yellow edible
  fruit.
• Zactecas-Miguel use to ride the train to
  Zactecas. I believe its a midway between Mexico
  California. A city in Mexico.
• Raton-Mamma said we were traveling through Raton.
  I think it is a city. The true meaning is a city.

Dust Storms

• Dust storms are very harmful.
• Many people can get sick form them, the dirt/dust
  can be inhaled and carried to the lungs causing
  many illnesses.
• Dust storms are also known as sand storms.
• Many dust storms are caused by large winds in dry
  areas.
• Dust storms can carry whole sand dunes.
• They harm small and large crops
• Although they are very harmful they can help
  other areas by their deposits.
• The benefits are rainforest get more minerals,
  oceans get more iron, and in Hawaii they plantain
  growth.
