  • I will introduce you to first grade and to our
    classroom.

All About Me
  • My background
  • I grew up in Gainesville.
  • I have a BS in Elementary Education and a Masters
    in Information Studies.
  • I am a National Board Certified Teacher.
  • My experience
  • Ive been teaching for 14 years.
  • I have also taught kindergarten, second grade and
    adults

My Goals
  • To give my students the academic and social
    skills they need to progress to second grade.
  • To provide a supportive and fun classroom
    environment.
  • To help students make new friends and discover
    new interests.

Technology
  • I use a variety of computer and internet based
    activities to enhance the entire curriculum.
  • I ask that you approve all the options on the
    Internet permission form.
  • Im am very careful with privacy on published
    work and pictures.
  • I have never had a problem with the projects I
    have students create.

Reading
  • Our research based program is Houghton Mifflin.
  • We will learn phonics and spelling skills.
  • Vocabulary and grammar
  • Comprehension skills and strategies
  • Students will be read to daily.

Independent Reading
  • After reading various books students will be
    asked to write in their Reading Response Journal.
  • Students will read books on their SRI level and
    take Reading Counts tests starting at different
    times during the year.
  • They may check books out from the classroom
    library or the school media center.

Literacy Workstations
  • This is the management system we use to cover
    whole group and small group instruction.
  • It includes independent seatwork,
  • four to five literacy centers,
  • and reading group.

Writing
  • Students will work on process writing skills
    using their draft book.
  • They will practice Writes Upon Request by
    brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing, and
    publishing.
  • They will take two official Writes Upon Request
    tests starting February. The passing score is
    3.5.
  • Other writing will include journals, blogging,
    and special reports and projects.

Math
  • We will be using the Harcourt Math Series.
  • We will complete about a chapter per week and
    test on Monday in the computer lab.
  • There will also be corresponding homework to help
    them practice for the tests.

Science
  • We have adopted the Scott Foresman science
    series.
  • It includes inquiry and science experiments.
  • We will also use Unitedstreaming and picture
    books to enhance our lessons.

Social Studies
  • Our social studies series is published by
    Houghton Mifflin.
  • We will use the districts social studies
    curriculum on various country studies too.

Classroom Community
  • Our classroom is a learning community. In our
    community, we have rules to help us get along
    with each other.
  • Our class rules are
  • We respect people and property.
  • We are kind to each other.
  • We work and walk in line quietly.
  • We obey our teachers and follow their directions.
  • We always try our best.

Homework
  • I will assign about 15-25 minutes of homework
    every night.
  • Student should also spend 15-20 minutes reading.
    Please help your child remember to have a book to
    read at all times.
  • The homework packet is due on Friday morning.

Tardiness
  • School starts at 830 A.M.
  • If you arent in the classroom by the time the
    second bell rings, please check in at the school
    office before coming to class.
  • If a student is tardy five times during a nine
    weeks, the school will contact parents.

A Few Notes
  • Our lunch time is 1218.
  • I will send home a letter requesting first nine
    weeks conferences.
  • Volunteer forms must be filled out to visit our
    class for parties or field trips.
