1
Chiropractic
  • Sports Medicine
  • Presented by
  • Jim Mylonas, Satdip Binning, Don Galovich,
  • Jason Leonard, Mark Lique

2
Chiropractic
  • Chiropractors are considered neuromusculoskeletal
specialist and are well-equipped to manage
    musculoskeletal dysfunction or injuries typically
    associated with sport.
  • Among health care professionals, chiropractors
are some of the most actively involved in
    sports-related conditioning, injury prevention,
    treatment, and rehabilitation.

3
World-Class Athletes and Chiropractic
  • Evander Holyfield
  • Tiger Woods
  • Emmit Smith
  • Joe Montana
  • Lance Armstrong
  • Wayne Gretzky
  • Governor Schwarzenegger
  • More than 30 of NFL teams employ a chiropractor
    on their full-time medical staff
  • 77 of athletic trainers refer to chiropractors

4
Athletic Triage Model
  • Life Support
  • EMS
  • Performance Enhancement
  • Restoration Regeneration
  • Chiropractic
  • Massage
  • Sports Psychology
  • Acute-Non Life Threatening
  • Athletic Training

5
Five Biomotor Skills
  • Endurance
  • Speed
  • Strength
  • Coordination
  • Flexibility

6
Performance Enhancement Endurance
  • Research has shown to increase VO2 Max
  • Increased oxygenation through correct posture
  • Nutritional Supplementation

7
Performance EnhancementSpeed
  • Increased reaction time post-manipulation
  • Increased CNS stimulation and function which
    increases muscular response

8
Performance EnhancementStrength
  • Optimal movement patterns and strength through
economy of motion can be enhanced via proper
  • Muscle balance
  • Increased core strength
  • Nutrition
  • Implementation of strength and conditioning
    programs

9
Performance EnhancementCoordination
  • Increases proper proprioception which results in
    enhanced neuromuscular coordination.
  • Allows for proper muscle coordination by
    decreasing unnecessary muscle contractions.
  • Proper coordination is essential for increases in
    strength, endurance, and power.

10
Performance EnhancementFlexibility
  • Increased intersegmental and extremity range of
    motions by
  • Joint manipulation
  • Soft tissue techniques to allow proper muscle
    balance
  • Stretching techniques

11
Injury Prevention
  • Core strength is critical to injury prevention.
Adequate core strength promotes better alignment,
posturing, and stability of the axial spine and
reduces the risk of traumatic and overuse
injuries, particularly for athletes engaging in
    severe torquing and twisting movements.
  • A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
  • Proper joint mechanics
  • Proper muscle balance
  • Repetitive motions can alter joint function long
before an injury is present, therefore
manipulation of joints which are found to be
dysfunctional can prevent the possibility of
    future injuries

12
Injury Prevention
  • Due to the chiropractors understanding of
biomechanical principles involved in sport, it
helps us not only to prevent injuries but, to
    restore functional integrity through
    rehabilitation.

13
Injury Management and Rehabilitation
  • Proper rehab of an athletic injury will decrease
    the chance of reoccurrence
  • Conservative management of sports injuries can
  • reduce down time
  • increase speed of return to play
  • avoid unnecessary surgeries and medications
  • correction of the primary cause of injuries and
    not just symptoms

14
Summary
  • More and more athletes are using chiropractic
  • Chiropractors are an essential member to the
    evolving athletic triage model
  • Performance enhancement can be achieved by
development of the 5 basic biomotor skills
  • Injury prevention is achieved by understanding
the correlation between deviations of body
    mechanics and injuries
  • Rehabilitation of sport injuries through
    conservative care

15
Summary
  • Optimal alignment of the spinal column allows for
    optimal sensory-motor function. This translates
into enhanced body position and body movement
awareness, agility, balance, range of motion,
    symmetry of motion, joint stability,
coordination, balance of muscle tone, symmetry of
load distribution, reaction time and control.
  • It is evident that chiropractic care is critical
to preventing and rehabilitation of injuries as
    well as maximizing peak performance.
