1
THE DESIGN ELEMENTS OF ART
2
Art Elements
  • Also called Design Elements
  • Are the building blocks of any work of art
  • Are like the alphabet is to writing words
  • A work of art can use 1 or more
  • Art Elements in its composition
  • The most basic element is LINE

4
-The path of a moving point -It is longer than
it is wider. -Lines do have some width as well as
length, this is called measure. -Types of line
refers to straight, curvy, horizontal, vertical,
diagonal, zigzag, implied, and angular.
-Direction pertains to the movement that a line
may have or seem to indicate up, down, etc.
-Lines are flat 2 dimensional marks

SHAPE
Shape is a two-dimensional area made by
enclosing lines to create an inner and outer
area Shapes may be positive or negative, organic
or geometric. Shapes may be emphasized also by
a difference of value, color, or texture.

8
VALUE
The lightness or darkness of a color or tone.
These range from black to white with numerous
shades of gray in between. (gray tones) When gray
tones (gray colors) are used realistically on a
drawing it is called SHADING

11
COLOR
The character of a surface created by the
response of vision to the wavelength of light
reflections. It identifies objects, creates
moods, and affects emotions. The use of colors
can also create depth . (color terms-warm, cool,
primary, secondary, intermediate or tertiary
analogous, and complementary).

13
TEXTURE
The surface quality of an object. Texture can
be real or Tactile (real wood), or an Implied
drawn illusion (drawn wood is an imitation).

  • J. Hildenberry 2001

15
SPACE
-Showing the illusion of depth -Drawn
two-dimensional space has height and width.
-Real three-dimensional space has height, width,
volume, and time. -Foreground is the closest
area, Middle Ground is the middle distance and
the Background is the furthest distance.

17
FORM
A three dimensional shape. It has volume,
dimension (height, width, depth) and takes up
mass. This element is frequently used in
sculpture. It may also refer to the overall
organization of the work of art, as a second
meaning.
