Highlights
Currently 109 Active GLOBE Countries
GLOBE has trained over 30,000 teachers
representing more than 17,000 schools
worldwide. Students have entered over 14 million
GLOBE measurements.
5
GLOBE Overview
  • GLOBE students throughout the world
  • Take environmental measurements using GLOBE
    scientific protocols
  • Report their observations to the GLOBE data
archive via the GLOBE Web site
  • Conduct student research on Earth science topics
using GLOBE maps and graphs and other GLOBE
    educational materials

6
Elizabeth City State University
  • Summer Research program in 2002 at ECSU
  • Environmental data monitoring stations for
    hydrology, atmosphere, land cover/biology and
    soil
  • Students use GLOBE protocols to collect
environmental data and to report that data to the
    GLOBE program.

7
GLOBE Science
  • GLOBE measurements provide
  • Hands-on scientific experiences
  • Data needed for Earth science research
  • GLOBE protocols ensure accurate results.
  • Protocols are like recipes list of steps to
    follow to collect the measurement

GLOBE Measurements
  • Atmospheric/Climate Studies
  • Air temperature (Maximum, Minimum, Current)
  • Precipitation (Rain, Snow, pH)
  • Cloud Cover/Type including contrails
  • Relative humidity
  • Barometric pressure
  • Surface ozone
  • Aerosols, water vapor
  • Hydrology Studies
  • Water temperature
  • Transparency
  • Water chemistry
  • pH, dissolved O , alkalinity, nitrate, salinity
    or conductivity
  • Freshwater macro-invertebrates
  • Soils Studies
  • Soil temperature, soil moisture
  • Soil bulk density, pH, particle size
    distribution, particle density, fertility

GLOBE Measurements
  • Land Cover / Biology
  • Land cover mapping (manual and computer-aided)
  • Biometry (canopy and ground cover, tree and shrub
  • height and diameter, grass biomass, species
    id)
  • Land cover change detection
  • Fire fuel ecology
  • Phenology
  • Green-up and green-down, budburst
  • Ruby-throated hummingbird monitoring
  • Phenological gardens
  • Common and clonal lilacs
  • Seaweed reproductive phenology
  • Arctic bird migration monitoring

Course Expectations
  • Have fun
  • Participate and answer questions
  • Take on-line surveys
  • So we know the course is on track
  • Answer daily journal questions on-line
  • So we know the course is on track
  • If you like what we do, think about bringing your
High School science teachers on board (or
    favorite Middle School science teacher)

14
Course Setup
  • Work in teams of 3
  • Create a team name
  • We will track team progress
  • Winning teams will win prizes at end of summer

15
Any Questions?
  • Go to http//www.wvglobe.org/idge/
  • Take the Student Attitudes Survey
  • Take the Thinking About Science Survey (TSSI-1)
  • Write the Day 1 Journal (more than one paragraph)

16
Extra Time?
  • Go to www.globe.gov
  • Enter the GLOBE site
  • For team points
  • What are the dates for the 2007 GlOBE at Night
    Star-hunting adventure?
