2Public transport
- Clear public transport network serving the
central areas of Vuores - Public transport has the shortest way to the City
Centre of Tampere - Light rail system already discussed by policy
makers. (The decision about its implementation
depends on the choice for the whole Tampere
region.)
3Public transport routes
4Public transport
Proposed light rail routes in the Tampere region
5Location of the Vuores area
- Vuores is situated on the border of the Tampere
city and the Lempäälä municipality. - The area is at present a green field area.
- The bee line from the centre of the area to the
city centre is 7 km - A bridge will be built over the Särkijärvi lake
for creating a direct connection to the city
centre. - The aim of the development of the area is to
prevent urban sprawl into the surrounding areas
of the Tampere city.
6Mixed use
- 3000 - 5000 workplaces
- Workplaces and services are concentrated in the
main centre and four subcentres of the area. - The northest subcentre forms a part of a bigger
job area - Job areas along the Ruskontie road function as a
buffer zone to the living areas.
7Landscape structure
- Relation with the Nature
- Short distances to green areas
- Preservation of biodiversity and integration of
nature in the urban concept (Garden City) - Consideration of climatic conditions (avoiding of
cold air lakes and shady areas, wind protection) - Analysis and protection of the natural water
cycle (stormwater management)
8Stormwater management
- Areal management practices
- wetlands
- ponds and basins
- shore infiltration
- naturally constructed streams
- On-site management practices
- drainage / infiltration trenches
- bioretention
- pervious pavement
- alternative street design
- Lot-level management practices
- detention by rain barrels cisterns
- grass swales
- rain gardens
- buffer strips
9EcoCity Vuores
Overview
10Main themes
- Environment,
- microclimate
- nature values,
- surface water treatment
- Effective public transport
- one main line enables light rail
- goes through cells / subcentres
- Mixed use
- concentrated in cells / subcenters
- job areas / buffer zones along ring road
11Terrain with slopes
12Most valuable areas
13Stormwater management
On-site management practices
14Energy
- Energy supply is based on existing district
heating network - Energy is produced by co-generation using as fuel
natural gas, peat and wood chips - Solar heat is partly utilised in the low and
dense housing areas - The building stock includes partly also low
energy buildings - Visible energy consumption by apartment specific
metering - Low cooling demand only in office buildings
15Community involvement
- Collaborative working group for Vuores
- Public meetings
- Interviews, enquiries
- Ecocity community committee
- Citizen workshops
- Events with investors and business sector
- Creation of Vuores vision
16Strengths and positive issues
- Relation with the Nature
- Short distances to green areas
- Preservation of biodiversity and integration of
nature in the urban concept (Garden City) - Consideration of climatic conditions (avoiding of
cold air lakes and shady areas, wind protection) - Analysis and protection of the natural water
cycle (stormwater treatment)
17Strengths and positive issues (cont)
- Public transport
- Clear public transport network serving the
central areas of Vuores - Public transport has the shortest way to the City
Centre of Tampere - Light rail system already discussed by policy
makers. (The decision about its implementation
depends on the choice for the whole Tampere
region.)
18Strengths and positive issues (cont)
- Community structure
- Good public service concept
- Architectural competition for finding a unique
soltion for the centre (genius loci) - Broad public discussion about the project
19Strengths and positive issues (cont)
- Energy system
- Centralised co-generation system
- Good thermal insulation level
20Weak points
- Green area development
- Low density (due to the protection of nature)
- Long distances
- Poor quality of the community involvement?
- Too much car oriented
- Too implementation focused?
