Repeated Subtraction Approach

• This approach subtracts out groups of a certain
  amount (12-4 8, 8-44,4-40)
• Also referred to as Measurement Approach-you are
  measuring out a certain amount repeatedly (we
  measured out 4 things, 3 times)
• Also referred to as Division by Grouping (we were
  grouping by 4s)

• Sara is having a birthday party and has invited 4
  friends. She has 12 cupcakes to share with her
  friends. How many cupcakes will each friend
  receive?

Division by Sharing

• Also called Partitive (you are partitioning a set
  into a certain number of groups)
• We partitioned our set of 12 cupcakes into 4
  groups of equal size
