MLEs for Lifelong Learning Aims and Objectives
The aim of the programme is to explore the issues
related to developing managed learning
environments to support the seamless movement of
the learner between and across sectors and
institutions.
  • establish cross institutional architectures to
deliver learning which can provide generic
solutions of benefit to the whole JISC community
  • explore access to and delivery of learning
    materials across institutions
  • develop protocols and standards for the transfer
of information across institutions and explore
the use of student learning profiles
  • measure and record the impact of
    cross-institutional systems on business processes
    of institutions
  • identify and address the implications for staff
    development
  • provide a formative development and
dissemination process throughout the lifetime of
the project which will engage the (JISC
    community)HE/FE sectors

students at the partner colleges in e-College
Wales with the right support, information and
course materials through the use of a MLE.
Project Objectives
  • The students at the partner colleges in
e-College Wales should get the same experience
on-line as the campus-based students at
    Glamorgan.
  • All students will receive the same levels of
support wherever they live in Wales and whichever
partner college is providing that support,
    including out of hours support.
  • Students have on-line access to course materials
through MLE, the use of tutorial discussion
groups and email communications is designed to be
    reliable and timely.
  • Moderation of discussion board communications
  • e-College Wales attend weekly meetings

9
Phase 2 Projects UEO Union Education Online
(Stow College)
The overall aim of the project is to apply
know-how from previous JISC funded MLE-related
activities to the online distance delivery of TUC
courses for trade union representatives.
Project Objectives
  • Several colleges each sharing access to a single
    VLE.
  • Data-sharing between the TUC and individual
colleges, and between the awarding body,
individual colleges, and a single VLE.
  • Business-focused dissemination of knowledge
    gained.

10
Phase 2 Projects JULIG Joined up Learning in
Glasgow
REALs overall aim is to provide the learner with
an uncomplicated, seamless learning pathway and
personal learning record that transcends member
institutions.  This project is the first step.
It will seek ways to ensure that the onus is not
on the learner to negotiate the transfer of data
between the provider (REAL, FE College, HE
institution) and the Scottish Qualifications
Authority (SQA) or employers.
Project Objectives
  • Evaluate the requirements of a Glasgow wide
application profile (GWAP) of IMS LIP, defining
and refining an initial  profile in partnership
    with main stakeholders
  • Investigate and report on interoperability and
systems integration issues across REAL, SQA and
employers and how this might link to the evolving
    HE and FE integration environment
  • Create guidelines on data protection issues in
this area of data transfer in a multi-user
    environment.
  • Explore "Personal Development Profiles",
    associated tools and employer interoperability
    preliminary work.

11
Phase 2 Projects PROSPERO (Queen Mary London)
PROSPERO aims to investigate requirements for
interoperability between FE, HE and employers
learning systems, to ensure that learners can
make use of LIP compliant personal development
records.   The project will investigate the range
of PDP data that might be stored and utilised,
and will pilot and evaluate its usage amongst
groups of ODL students.
Project Objectives
  • Requirements investigation and specification
    into mechanisms for supporting Creation,
    management and enrichment of PDRs.
  • Evaluation and refinement of support procedures
for the maintenance, development and integration
of private and shared components of the Learner
Profile as it is used in the context of FE, HE
    and employment-related processes.

12
Phase 2 Projects TOPLINE (Liverpool University)
The overall aim is to investigate how the
transfer of Personal Development Records (PDRs)
across institutions supports learning and
teaching.
Project Objectives
  • Identify current records held at Carmel and
Wirrel Metropolitan Colleges which relate to PDP
process and describe current use of these records
in supporting student learning in the colleges.
  • Identify any problems and barriers in developing
or accessing records which would support the
students transition into the University of
    Liverpool.
  • Determine requirements for the electronic
storage, security, communication and use of these
    records.
  • Build a rapid prototyped toolkit to effect data
    transfer
  • Identify problems and barriers in the use made
of these records by students and tutors together
    within the University of Liverpool.
  • Develop an agreed vision of how PDRs can best
    support transitions and learning.

13
Phase 2 Projects Developing LT Aspects of
Progress Files PDPs (Loughborough College)
The overall aim of the project is to explore the
use of learner profiles developed in FE through
Progress File and how they can be developed
electronically and effectively transferred and
assimilated into the HE Personal Development
Profile.
Project Objectives
  • Explore the PDP aspect of the HE Learner Profile
and to identify suitable elements for development
  • Work with particular students and tutors at
Loughborough College and the RNIB Vocational
College and to utilize existing Progress File
expertise to develop learning and teaching
formative processes which allow for the evidence
required for the PDP to be produced.
  • Develop an electronic Progress File at
Loughborough College, which will allow for
effective technical transfer into the PDP model
    and IMS LIP.
  • Contribute to an existing project at
Loughborough University, which focuses on the
    development of PDP.
  • Ensure that the needs of students with
    disabilities, particularly visual impairment, are
fully addressed and to ensure that learner
profiles transferred to HE facilitate effective
progression and the early identification of
support needs and resulting support provision.
  • Evaluate the project comprehensively and
thoroughly and to ensure effective dissemination
locally and within the wider JISC community

14
Phase 2 Projects Specifying an e-portfolio
(Nottingham University)
The overall aim of the project is to develop a
technical framework to enable the widespread use
of enhanced Learner information within more
flexible HE admissions processes. To provide
plain English scenarios of these processes as the
context for an outline application profile of the
HE admissions process and as a basis for a formal
technical standard supplementing BS 8788, UK
LeaP. In this way specify e-portfolio in the
context of HE admissions.
Project Objectives
  • To propose an extension of the current UCAS form
domain in line with the emerging new flexible
framework for HE admissions with particular
    reference to the Personal Statement.
  • To transfer applicant data from FE to HE,
joining up PDP processes and Personal Development
Records (PDRs) in specific partnerships bridging
    FE and HE.
  • To transfer enhanced applicant data to UCAS into
a MLE in each of the three HEIs in the consortium.
  • To provide, publish and report (to both national
    and international bodies) a technical
specification for an IMS LIP application profile,
for the transfer of enhanced learner information
through an admissions process into a MLE in HE.
  • To manage, report, evaluate and disseminate the
    project activities.
