RABI CAMPAIGN 2007-08
DIRECTORATE OF HORTICULTURE DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE
41
Basic Data
Chhattisgarh State is endowed with tremendous
opportunities and favorable conditions for
promoting horticultural crops in the country.
42
Chhattisgarh State
  • Three distinct agro-climatic zones - distinct
    climatic and edaphic characteristics provides
    opportunity for diverse Horticulture crops.
  • Total area under Horticultural crops 205614 ha.

43
Highlights
  • Suitability of the climate - (early Dasheri
fruits in May, successful growing of Potato in
both Rabi and Khareef season in Sarguja
  • Traditionally rich pockets of specific crops -
like Tomato in Pathalgaon block of Jashpur and
Potato in Mainpaat of Ambikapur district and
Pandrapaat of Bageecha block of Jashpur).
  • Adjoining markets - State is surrounded by the 5
states of Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal, Jabalpur),
    Orissa (Sambalpur, Bhubaneshwar), Jharkhand
    (Ranchi), Uttar Pradesh (Varanasi), Maharashtra
(Nagpur), and Andhra Pradesh (Hyderabad, Vizag)..
  • Large area for Kharif (Sarguja and Jashpur) as
well as Rabi (entire state) Potato production
  • Harnessing of the climatic factors for maximum
growing period (which gives opportunity of
    growing off season vegetables).
  • Rapid growth for commercial hi-tech cultivation
of vegetables and Banana, and Papaya.
  • Assured marketing arrangements have been made for
sufficient period (through advance signing of
    MoUs).

52
1. CROP BASED CLUSTER APPROACH
  • Feature UNIQUE only to Chhattisgarh.
  • Clusters formed on basis of crops.
  • Clusters are formed of villages and not of
    districts
  • Each cluster constitutes
  • 200-500 Hectares (250-500 Acres) in one patch
Fruit Orchard Mango (Central Zone), Litchi
    (Sarguja), Cashew (Raigarh and Jagdalpur).
  • To obtain this, selection of 10-20 villages
    within 25-30 Km. radius.
  • In one village, there should be minimum 10
    Hectares (25 Acres).
  • Micro Cluster (Single Crop, Small Area, Few
    Farmers
  • Micro Cluster (Single Crop, Small Area, Few

2. Chhattisgarh Horticulture Model
An innovative approach for development of
Horticulture Sector in the State
  • Orchard Development (Fruits)
  • Compulsory Intercropping
  • Drip Irrigation / Sprinkler

cluster of farmers in community approach.
  • Care is to be taken to dig bore wells that at
least one acre of land of each of the farmer of
cluster/ group is irrigated and at least one
    bore-well caters to 6-10 acres.
  • Suitable sites to be identified for digging of
    Bore well ..
  • Bore-wells to be dug according to rates approved
    by the Ziladhakhsha/ PHED Department.
  • Electrification, Electricity Charge and
maintenance by farmer self help group method
    (SHG) (Affidavit on Stamp Paper)

along with their Khasra numbers (Main Cluster
    Data MCD)
  • Cluster Irrigation Plan (CIP)
  • Cluster Processing Plan (CPP)
