Spanish is spoken by more people as a first language than any other. It may not be as internationally recognized as English or French, but certainly in Central and South America as well as several Caribbean islands it is the most important language indeed. With the exception of Brazil, Belize, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, Spanish is spoken from the Rio Grande in the North to the tip of South America as well as in the island nations of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Of course it is spoken by tens of millions of Europeans in Spain and the offshore islands of the Canaries.
