A crankshaft reluctor wheel is a small, custom-made component that can help smooth out engine performance and fuel economy. When the engine is working properly, its pistons and crankshaft rotate around a central shaft at an incredibly high speed - up to 18,000 revolutions per minute! To prevent the crank from being damaged from vibrations caused by this high-speed rotation, a small, metal disc called a reluctor wheel is attached to the shaft directly above each piston. The reluctor wheel interacts with the magnetic field of a sensor that is placed in front of the engine and detects the revolutions of the crankshaft.
