Subjunctive in English

• We use it all the time!

• wishful thinking
• I have only 10 dollars. ? (fact)
• If only I had a million dollars. (wish)
• had in this example does not refer to past
  time
• it is a subjunctive form and refers to the
  present

• To express wishful thinking
• you use different verb forms than when you are
  talking about facts.
• By using subjunctive forms the speaker indicates
  that what he/she says is contrary-to-fact or
  hypothetical.

• in colloquial German these are rarely used

• all other verbs appear in a construction that is
