Title: 3 Types of Plagiarism

1
3 Types of Plagiarism
2
3 is the Magic Number
  • Direct plagiarism
  • Paraphrase plagiarism
  • Patchwork plagiarism

3
Direct Plagiarism
  • Taking the exact words from a source and
    presenting them as your own
  • Cut and paste

4
Direct plagiarism example
  • Okay, we dont really need an example here. I
    think this is pretty obvious.

5
Paraphrase Plagiarism
  • When a writer takes the ideas of another writer
in nearly the exact words as the original.
  • This can happen with careless paraphrasing on
    your note cards.

6
Paraphrase plagiarism example
  • The plan was a loyal bootlegger to Capone would
draw Moran and his gang to the warehouse under
the feeling that they would be receiving a
shipment of smuggled whiskey for a price that
proved too good to be true (Brown 1).

Paraphrase plagiarism example (cont.)
  • The Plan A bootlegger loyal to Capone would draw
Moran and his gang to a warehouse under the
pretense that they would be receiving a shipment
smuggled whiskey for a price that proved to good
    to be true.

  • The bold is straight from the Web site.

9
How to fix?
  • Yes, it is cited, but here the writer is passing
it off as his own thoughts.
  • Fix 1 Quote word for word and actually put
    quotation marks around the quote.
  • Fix 2 Put the ideas down in your own words
instead of switching two or three words.
  • Read the source, put it down and write a note
card without looking back at the source.

10
Patchwork plagiarism
  • When a writer takes the ideas of another writer
and patches them together as his or her own.
  • Basically, switching the order from the research
    into your own essay.

11
Im nervous, what can I do?
  • Remember, I am here to help you learn. Always
ask if you are not sure. I will not take points
off, look down upon you, have you arrested, etc.
if you accidentally plagiarize before the final
    draft.
  • Be careful and patient with you citations.
  • Make your note cards work for you. Scribbling to
get homework points will hurt you in the long
    run.
