Title: How to make a quote sandwich

1
How to make a quote sandwich
2
A quote sandwich has 3 main parts
  • Context
  • Quote
  • Analysis

3
An example of a quote sandwich
  • When George realizes he can no longer care for
Lenny and keep others safe, it is necessary for
him to make a moral decision. After several
actions by Lenny towards living creatures, George
contemplates his life without Lenny If I was
alone I could live so easy (Steinbeck 197). This
scene lets the reader know that George could have
had a better life without Lenny but he will not
when Lenny is gone. George is speculating about
what could have been, not about how things will
    be once he kills Lenny.

4
1. Context
  • Where in the story the quote is from
  • Which character said or thought it
  • What is happening at that moment
  • Example
  • When George realizes he can no longer care
for Lenny and keep others safe, it is necessary
for him to make a moral decision.

5
2. Quote
  • Should not be too long
  • Should not merely state a fact
  • Must be punctuated correctly
  • Must be followed by the correct citation
  • Example
  • After several actions by Lenny towards living
creatures, George contemplates his life without
Lenny If I was alone I could live so easy
    (Steinbeck 197).

6
2.5 Punctuating the quote
  • If the quote begins without identifying the
author then you begin with the , capitalize the
first letter, end with and then the final
    punctuation needed . ? !
  • If the quote begins with identifying the author
it begins with the authors name, then the
quotation set off with a comma, Mrs. Jamin said,
the quote will start with a lower case letter if
    you lead into it.

7
Citing the quotation
  • After the quotation ends, the writer must insert
the name of the author, or if not available the
first key words of the title, and page/paragraph
    number if available.
  • This information will be encased in parenthesis
    after the quote.
  • The end punctuation goes after the parenthesis.

8
3. Analysis
  • Your interpretation
  • Explain how it proves your point
  • Describe what the quote reveals
  • Example
  • This scene lets the reader know that George
could have had a better life without Lenny but he
will not when Lenny is gone. George is
speculating about what could have been, not about
how things will be once he kills Lenny.

Context Quote Analysis
  • When George realizes he can no longer care for
Lenny and keep others safe, it is necessary for
him to make a moral decision. After several
actions by Lenny towards living creatures, George
contemplates his life without Lenny If I was
alone I could live so easy (Steinbeck 197). This
scene lets the reader know that George could have
had a better life without Lenny but he will not
when Lenny is gone. George is speculating about
what could have been, not about how things will
    be once he kills Lenny.

Some notes
  • This example was a very simple version of a quote
    sandwich.
  • The context, quote, and analysis can, and often
will be, more than one sentence each.
  • The main purpose of quoting is to support your
    analysis.
