Stage 1
Waves attack weak points in the headland through
processes of erosion (Abrasion, H Action,
Corrosion)
Cave
Weaknesses are enlarged and widened by erosion.
Caves begin to form
7
Stage 2
The base of the arch is undercut with a Wave Cut
Notch
The cave erodes right through forming an arch. Or
caves form on both sides of headland.
The erosion continues and the arch gets larger..
8
Stage 3
..and leaves a stack
The sea continues to break up the eroded material
into smaller pieces
The roof of the arch collapses due to gravity..
9
Stage 4

retreats
