Aqueducts 1/4
  • Early aqueducts were channels bored through rock.
  • The death of the channel below ground was varied
to maintain a very shallow drop (less than 1/200)
  • vertical shafts were bored at intervals to
    provide ventilation and access.
  • As time went on roman engineers became more
daring in the in the construction of high arches
to support the conduits across valleys and plains

4
Aqueducts 2/4
  • some of the later aqueducts were as tall as 100
    feet above ground level.
  • Closed pipes were occasionally used to cross
valleys by the inverted syphon method the
pressure forced the water down and up again on
the other side to a level slightly lower than
    before.
  • But this system was costly, as it required lead
pipes (lead had to be imported) and it was
difficult to make strong enough joints
  • So archers were far more common

5
Aqueducts 3/4
  • Except were closed pipes were used, the channel
in which the water flowed was 3feet wide x 6 feet
    tall,
  • to allow workers to walk its length - when the
water supply had been cut off - for inspection
    and maintenance.

6
Aqueducts 4/4
  • Were the Aqueduct went through impermeable rock
it was not lined, but were the the rock was
porous, and were the conduit ran on arches
  • A layer of concrete was applied to form a
    waterproof lining
  • every now and then there was a sedimentation
tank, were the flow of water slowed down and
    impurities removed

7
Roads
  • Every were in Rome there were roads all of witch
were made of stone the closest example I cam
think of is the cobble stone roads in old St.
Charles MO. But with bigger stones and primitive
    concrete holding it together.

How Aqueducts and roads were made
  • The were made In a lot of different ways for more
info look back at the Aqueduct section and the
    road section
  • roads were huge stones arranged in a row and
    sealed with concrete.
  • Aqueducts were very complex for there time the
calculations had to be exact other wise the water
    would never reach Rome.
