Comparing CP and NCP BVDV Vaccines Antigen
Trafficking Increased to Mucosal Surfaces with
NCP Vaccines
  • CCL Chase1, LJ Braun1, L Holler1 and M Spire2
  • 1Dept Vet Sci, SDSU, Brookings, SD
    2Schering-Plough Animal Health, Elkhorn NE

2
Background
  • Distribution of CP NCP BVDV Spagnulo-Weaver et
    al 1997
  • Infected with MD case (NCP or CP) or cloned NCP
or CP- found NCP longer and in more tissues
  • Biotypes- Lambot et al 1997 1998
  • Immune Response Difference between NCP or CP pair
  • Faster with NCP and decreased virus shed

3
Materials Methods
  • 24 Non-suckled calves 3-4 weeks of age (CD)
  • Colostral whey product BVDV antibody negative

4
Materials Methods
Vaccinated IM in the left side of the
neck Euthanized calves at 0, 3, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15,
or 18 days
5
Materials Methods
6
Materials Methods
  • Immunohistochemistry on the tissues using 15C5
    mAb
  • Pathologist was blinded to calves and tissue
    origin
  • Positive tissues were graded on a scale of 1-4,
  • with 4 demonstrating the most severe BVDV
    infection.
  • Each set of tissues was from 6 animals so the
    highest
  • possible score would be 24 (444444).

Summary
  • Antigen from a NCP vaccines localized in the
Peyers Patches at day 6 and was sustained to day
    18 day.
  • Antigen from CP vaccine varied by isolate- one
vaccine had one day positive another 3 days
  • Implications- mucosal immunity
