Title: Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

1
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
2
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health
Administration)
  • Purpose informs the public
  • Number system 1 Most severe
  • 4 Least severe
  • Information provided on label
  • Health hazards on label
  • Physical hazards on label

3
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Document describing all hazards and precautions
for each chemical used in a lab
  • MUST be Accessible to EVERYONE
  • Must be current
  • Must be made available to physician in the event
    of exposure

4
Label vs. SDS Sheet
  • Label is concise wording or pictures warnings to
    be printed on chemical container
  • SDS Sheet full explanation of all hazards,
    dangers, containment, environmental danger, and
    procedures in case of exposure

6
Protocols/Scenarios
7
PASS
  • Pull the Pin
  • Aim the Hose
  • Squeeze the Handle
  • Sweep Side to Side

8
Acid Safety
  • Always add acid to water.
  • A comes before W, so Acid is added to Water
  • Pour slowly and do not splatter

9
Eye Safety
  • Goggles must be worn at ALL times in the lab. If
goggles are not worn, you will receive a zero on
    that lab.
  • Eye Demo, Contact Demo, Goggles

10
Dress Safety
  • No dangling jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets,
watches, puffy sleeved shirts, and IDs that
dangle may get caught on glassware, fall into
chemicals, or swing into the flame.
  • Long Hair Long hair should be tied back at all
    times when in the lab.

11
  • No open toed shoes. This is to prevent broken
glass, chemicals, and other harmful materials
    from getting on your feet.
  • Pants are good for protecting your legs.
  • Dont wear clothing that you would hate to have
get dirty. The best prevention is to not wear
nice clothes on days you know you will be in
    lab.

12
Safety Equipment
  • Fire Extinguishers-
  • A Combustibles (Paper, wood)
  • B Liquids (Gasoline, Kerosene)
  • C Electrical
  • D Metal (Magnesium, Zinc)
  • Most schools have ABC fire extinguishers. When
working with metals we will have a D class fire
    extinguisher present in the room

13
  • Chemical Spill In the case of acids or bases
being spilt on the floor or lab bench, notify the
teacher immediately, and get it cleaned up. This
way it is not being tracked around in the room,
and someone doesnt accidentally get it on them.
  • Sand Used to extinguish metal fires.
  • Baking Soda Used to neutralize an acid spill
  • Kitty Litter Used to soak up and contain a
    liquid spill.

14
Student Use of the Laboratory
  • No Unauthorized experiments.
  • No eating or drinking in the lab. Chemicals can
get into food and drink easily and without your
    immediate knowledge.
  • Do not drink from lab equipment. You dont know
what other people have put into the lab equipment
    that you are drinking from.

15
  • Do not test the odor of a chemical directly. In
order to prevent this, wafting is the procedure
    we use.
  • Remember, hot glassware looks the same as cold
glassware so always check it before grabbing hold
    of it.
  • Always point test tubes away from yourself and
others so that chemicals will not splatter out
    onto you, or others.

16
  • NO HORSEPLAY!!! Horseplay in the lab is not
    allowed.
  • Your group must clean their lab area completely,
    and leave everything organized.
  • Leave the lab in an orderly manner with no
    pushing or shoving.

17
Before Lab
  • Always READ the experiment beforehand. Sometimes
a quiz will be given over the lab. Sometimes
there will be questions to answer before being
    allowed to go to lab.
