affect the story line.

  • Literary Genres. There are
    four
  • main literary genres
  • 1. Fiction
  • 2. Nonfiction
  • 3. Poetry
  • 4. Drama

  • II. Fiction
  • A narrative story that uses made up characters or
    events is called fiction.
  • Some stories are all fiction, while others may be
    based on real people or events, but still tell a
    fictional story.
  • III. Subgenres of Fiction
  • Realistic Fiction- imaginative writing set in the
    real, modern world.
  • Historical Fiction- fiction set in the past (ex.
    Boy of the Painted Cave)
  • Fantasy-Literature that contains at least one
    fantastic or unreal element.
  • Scientific Fiction-fiction based on real or
    possible scientific developments (usually set in
    the future or have technological advances, but
    characters still face problems people face today.

  • IV. NONFICTION (A.K.A. Expository Text)
  • Writing that tells about real people, places, and
    events are called nonfiction. There are two types
    of literary nonfiction informative and factual.
  • The main purpose is to inform and explain.
  • Types of nonfiction autobiographies,
    biographies, essays, news articles.
  • Example Biography of Anne Frank

  • V. Poetry
  • Poetry is a type of literature where ideas,
    images, and feelings are expressed in only a few
    words. Most poetry is written in lines which may
    take the form of stanzas. Poetry will combine
    words to create vivid pictures to express their
    ideas.
  • Examples acrostic poems, Haiku, free verse, and
    cinquains.

  • VI. Drama
  • Drama is a form of literature that is performed
    before an audience. In drama, the story is
    presented by characters. The written form of
    drama is the script. The script gives all the
    characters instructions about performing the
    play.
  • Two important forms of drama are comedy and
    tragedy.
  • - Examples Romeo and Juliet
  • and Wicked
