Title: Explain Your Stuff

1
Explain Your Stuff
  • Flight Science Review

2
1 Give an Example of hot air rising to create
lift. Explain why this happens
  • An example of hot air rising to create lift is a
    hot air balloon
  • A hot air balloon can fly because when air is
heated, it rises. The balloon traps the hot air.
Eventually, the air heats up and rises enough
that its push up on the balloon is greater than
the pull of gravity. It flies!

3
2. Which property of air is being demonstrated
  • A Air has mass
  • B Air moves around

4
3. State Bernoullis Principle in your own words.
  • Bernoullis Principle states that faster moving
air has less pressure (or pushes less) on an
    object than slower moving air.

5
4. Identify 2 everyday situations or products
that illustrate Bernoullis Principle.
  1. Airplanes flying
  2. Race Cars

6
5. Describe the 4 forces acting on flying devices.
  1. Thrust propels the device forward
  2. Drag slows the device down as it moves through
    the air
  3. Lift keeps the device in the air
  4. Gravity pull the device toward the Earth

7
6. How can drag be reduced when
  • A. Walking dont wear baggy clothes
  • B. Taking part in sports wear equipment that is
    aerodynamic (air passes over easily)
  • C. Flying a plane fly with the wind, or dont
    fly when it is windy.

8
7. In order to fly, a plane needs enough lift to
overcome what?
  • Gravity

9
8. Name 2 Canadians who have contributed to the
science and technology of aircraft and describe
their inventions
  • William Wallace Gibson created small model
    planes that flew
  • Roland Groome and Robert McCombie made the first
    flight from Saskatoon to Regina

10
10. Describe one safety precaution that you
practiced when learning about air and flight.
  • Do not fly flight devices in the direction of
other students. Always find an open area to test
    a flying device.

11
11. Think of 2 different types of flying devices
that you have learned about.
  • Hot air balloons
  • Passenger airplanes
  • Military aircraft
  • Utility aircraft (Water bombers, air ambulance,
    etc)
