• Adults with autism face many problems. They are
  often left out of society.
• We need to make big changes to solve these
  problems.
• It will be hard and take a long time but we need
  a plan to start making lives better.

• In 2009 the Department of Health made a new law
  called the Autism Act 2009.
• It says that services must work together for
  Adults with autism.
• The National Autism Strategy tells everyone how
  to follow the new law.

Knowing about autism

• We need everyone to understand about autism so
  that adults with autism can be included.
• Staff (doctors, nurses, support workers, police
  etc) need training
• Workers may need to change how they do things

Finding out if you have autism

• NICE are writing a plan to tell doctors how to
  check if someone has autism.
• Local councils should assess people to find out
  what support someone needs.
• All local areas should have a team of different
  autism experts.

Getting the right support

• There is already a law that says services have to
  make some changes so everyone can use their
  services.
• People with autism should be able to have more
  choice and control over their support.
• Lots of local areas give good support to people
  with autism. We need to learn from them in other
  areas.

Finding work

• Working is the best way to get money, have a
  better life and be part of society.
• We want to change the system to help adults with
  autism find and keep work.
• The Department for Work and Pensions are helping
  people to do this.

Local services

• Each local area has to write a plan about meeting
  local needs.
• Lots of people can help including people with
  autism and their carers.
• The plan should say how we will get services
  right for people with autism.

Next steps

• This is the first plan to talk about what the
  Department of Health wants to see happen.
• More details will be given out about how to make
  these changes happen.
• In three years they will check the plans and see
  what has changed for people with autism.
