Computer Science ResearchWhat is it?

• Do things that have not been done before
• Goal Advance the field of computer science.
• Theoretical
• Explore what can and cant be done w/ computers
• Application
• Apply computers and computing power to solving
  problems

Research How do I go about doing it?

• Come up with idea
• Do a literary search
• Make sure this issue has not been addressed
• Dont be disappointed if it has!
• Understand what has been done before
• Helps you place your work into a larger context
• Do the research
• No one will be around to hold your hand!
• You WILL make mistakes!!!

Publishing

• Discuss with your advisor to see if your
  contribution warrants a submission
• Submit paper to a conference
• Graphics 4 pages short paper, 8-12 pages
  long paper, plus VIDEO (lt5 minutes)
• Sections Introduction, Previous Work, Your
  Stuff, Results, Conclusions, Future Work
• After more work, submit paper to journal.
• Graphics 15-30 pages (double spaced)

Research Notes

• Read up on area first
• Constantly discuss ideas with people
• Discuss with nerds
• Discuss with non-nerds
• Helps you figure out what the heck you are doing!
• Practice your talks!!!!!

Graduate School

• Computer Science B.S. (3-6 years)
• Fundamental Computer Science
• Not much specialization
• Industry Can get a good job!!!
• Academia Teach High School
• Computer Science M.S. (2-3 years)
• Specialized in an area of Computer Science
• Industry Helps with moving up the ladder
• Academia Teach initial courses at large
  universities, more courses at colleges.
• Computer Science PhD (3-10 years)
• Significant contribution to the advancement of
  Computer Science
• Industry Helps with management and team
  leadership positions
• Academia Teach and research at large universities
