Kano, Nigeria -- At least 47 people were killed
and 79 were wounded Monday by a suicide bombing
outside a school in northern Nigeria. The
attacker was disguised as a student when he set
off the explosion in a boarding school in the
town of Potiskum. The explosion took place at
750 a.m. local time outside the principal's
office, where students had gathered for a daily
speech. "We were waiting for our teachers to come
and address us at the assembly ground when we
heard a huge explosion," student Adamu Ibrahim
said. Local police believe that "Boko Haram is
behind the attack. Although no one? has claimed
responsibility for the attack, Boko Haram is the
prime suspect. The radical Islamic militant group
has carried out deadly attacks on schools
teaching Western curriculum. The group's
five-year rebellion is aimed at establishing an
Islamic state? in Nigeria.

  • Pope Francis has reassigned a conservative
American cardinal from a key post to one that is
mostly symbolic. Cardinal Raymond Burke, a
leading conservative, has been vocal in his
criticism of the direction the Pope is leading
the Catholic Church in. Burke was one of the
highest ranking Americans in the church hierarchy
in his position on the Vatican's supreme court.
But he was reassigned to the position of Patron
of the Order of Malta, the Vatican announced on
Saturday. The National Catholic Reporter points
out that Burke's new post is a job that "has
almost no responsibilities. The Vatican did not
give a reason for the demotion.
  • They've spent 10 years together, swinging by the
Earth and Mars on a cosmic roadtrip that has
taken them to a mysterious celestial body but on
Wednesday they are due to separate -- the parting
marked with farewell photographs. The Philae
landing craft that is due to touch down on the
surface of a comet racing towards the Sun will
snap some images of the mother ship Rosetta after
it breaks its bonds and embarks on its seven-hour
descent to the surface of Comet
    67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko -- 67P for short.
Rosetta has already become the first probe to
orbit a comet, and, if successful, Philae will
notch up another achievement by becoming the
first craft to land on one. Led by the European
Space Agency (ESA) with a consortium of partners
including NASA, scientists hope to learn more
about the composition of comets and how they
interact with the solar wind -- high energy
particles blasted into space by the Sun.
