State-by-state A frenzied few months on the
same-sex marriage front

• The wave started last summer in the Supreme Court
  with a 5-4 vote, the high court's decision on
  United States v. Windsor. The federal government
  would now have to recognize marriages between gay
  and lesbian couples, but the ruling did not
  overturn prohibitions on such legal unions within
  individual states (states rights). Yet the
  prevailing opinion has proven to be momentous,
  especially given what's happened in its
  aftermath. Since Windsor, 19 states have acted --
  either via their courts or their legislatures --
  to legalize same-sex marriage (PA the most recent
  of the 19). Courts have repeatedly claimed that
  having one set of marriage rules for
  heterosexuals and another for gays and lesbians
  violates the 14th Amendment's assertion that no
  "state (can) deprive any person of life, liberty,
  or property nor deny to any person within its
  jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
  Experts say this fast-moving wave of decisions
  will ultimately climax where it began, on the
  nation's top court -- "This will only
  authoritatively be decided by the U.S. Supreme
  Court."

• A series of al Qaeda-based threats to attack
  American and Western targets in Europe, as well
  as threats to launch attacks inside the United
  States, has caused significant concern inside the
  U.S. intelligence community, CNN has learned.
  Officials are trying to determine the extent to
  which the threats may be linked and determine
  what it may mean about the strength of al Qaeda
  in several countries. While the "threat stream"
  has evolved during the past six months, according
  to a senior U.S. official, none of the threats
  has been corroborated.
