Abstract This presentation to 802.15
summarizes the work done by the study group
during the January meeting in Tel Aviv. It was
presented during the joint 802.11 and .15 plenary
session. Purpose This presentation captures
the activities and discussions of the week.
Since the main agenda of the meeting was
fulfilled so quickly, much of the follow-on work
was ad hoc and detailed in 00/002r0.

PAR Scope
This project will define the PHY and MAC
specifications for high data rate (see 13a)
wireless connectivity with fixed, portable and
moving devices within or entering a Personal
Operating Space (POS) (See 13b). A goal of the
WPAN-HR (High Rate) Task Group will be to achieve
a level of interoperability or coexistence with
other 802.15 Task Groups, or an 802.11 device
(see 13c). It is also the intent of this project
to work toward a level of coexistence with other
wireless devices in conjunction with Coexistence
Task Groups such as 802.15.2.

PAR Purpose
To provide a standard for low complexity, low
cost, low power consumption, high data rate
wireless connectivity among devices within or
entering the Personal Operating Space (POS). The
data rate will be high enough, 20 Mbps or more
(see 13a), to satisfy a set of multimedia
industry needs for WPAN communications. The
project will also address the Quality of Service
capabilities required to support multimedia data
types.

Proposal
  • The purpose of this project is to provide
    highspeed PHY and MAC enhancement to 802.15 Task
    Group 1 for applications which involve imaging,
    multimedia, and networks with more than 8 users
    in consumer devices.

Broad Market Potential
  • Today, low bandwidth wireless systems do not
    satisfy the needs for consumer priced,
    embedded, high data rate systems.

  • Kiosk for imaging, MP3, coupons
  • Toys, robots
  • Support currently includes Motorola, Eastman
    Kodak, Cisco Systems.

Compatibility

  • The proposal will be backward compatible to the
    Task Group 1 1Mbps mode using the dual mode PHY
    layer and MAC.
  • Is intended to conform to the 802 standards
    guidelines imposed on 802.15.
  • Study Group will work with Coexistence Task Group.

Distinct Identity
  • 20 Mbps High Speed Personal Area Network is not
    currently recognized as a Standards study group.
  • 802.11a addresses the speed, but not the
    requirements of an embeddable consumer oriented
    WPAN or BT band compatible
  • 802.11b does not address the speed
  • 802.15.1 addresses the requirements of an
    embeddable consumer oriented WPAN, but not the
    speed.

Technical Feasibility
  • PHY - A 20 Mbps prototype is operational.
  • ASIC architecture has passed internal feasibility
    review
  • Prototype performance testing has started
  • MAC - Several enhancements to 802.15 TG1 are
    being modeled and simulated at the Protocol and
    Network levels.
  • Technology is scaleable to higher data rates and
    5.8 GHz.
