  • Training should be programme based
  • Training should begin with broadly-based
    programmes pursued by all trainees
  • Programmes should be time limited
  • Training should allow for individually tailored
    or personal programmes
  • Arrangements should facilitate movement into and
    out of training and between training programmes

  • The five key principles should be the basis for
    reform of basic specialist and general practice
    training
  • There should be sufficient opportunities for
    flexible (part-time) training
  • There should be access to early and regular
    career advice

  • After graduating doctors should undertake an
    integrated, planned two-year foundation programme
    of general training
  • The first year equating to the current
    pre-registration house officer year
  • The second (post registration) incorporating a
    generic first year of current SHO training
  • After completing their foundation programme,
    doctors should enter a basic specialist programme
    providing a breadth of education and training
    within certain broad clinical disciplines
