Title: Accents

1
Accents
  • If a word ends in an n, s, or vowel, then the
word is stressed on the penultimate (next to
last) syllable. E.g. clase, tomamos, casas,
    sombrero, corbata.
  • If a word endings in any other letter, then the
stress falls on the last syllable. E.g. tomar,
    invitar, papel, reloj, universidad.
  • A written accent mark must always be used to
indicate an exception to these rules. E.g.
    camión, avión, pulmón, águila, antipático

2
Accents
  • If a word has an accent in the singular form on
the last syllable, then it loses its accent for
the plural form (because of the s). E.g.
    camión, camiones pulmón, pulmones

3
accents
  • When there is an affirmative command and direct
and/or indirect objects attached, there is often
    (but not always) an accent.
  • How you determine where the accent is placed
depends on how the word is pronounced without the
    pronouns attached.
  • For example, if you have the verb escribir and
you change it into an Ud. command, then its
escriba. The stress is on the syllable scri,
the penultimate syllable, because it ends in a
    vowel.

4
accents
  • If you want to say Write to me, how would you
    say that?
  • Escriba me
  • But remember that if you had no accent, then it
would be pronounced differently, with an emphasis
on the ba because it ends in a vowel (causing
the penultimate syllable to be stressed). But
you know the word stress is supposed to stay the
same, so you should put an accent on the i to
    maintain the same word stress.
  • Escríbame.

5
accents
  • If you want to say, Write it to me, it
referring to the message (el mensaje), then you
put the direct object after the indirect object,
    making it
  • Escríbamelo.
  • When you have indirect and direct object pronouns
together in one sentence, they always go in the
    order 1) IOP 2) DOP
  • If its a negative command, remember that the
    pronoun(s) go before the verb.
  • No me escriba (Dont write to me)
  • No me lo escriba. (Dont write it to me)
