CAD/CAM/CAE
  • Use of computers to Design, Analyze, and
    Manufacture Mechanical Parts
  • Example Autocad
  • Basic CAD System
  • Use lines to represent the shape of your part
  • Patterned after the drawing process
  • Example SDRC I-DEAS
  • Advanced CAD/CAM/CAE system
  • Use Feature Based Solid Modeling to generate
    parts
  • Variational or Parametric Modeling

4
CAD/CAM/CAE (cont.)
  • Solid Modeling
  • Parts are 3-D shapes with Material Side
  • Uses features to describe shape
  • Block, cylinder, sphere, ..etc.
  • Parametric or Variational
  • Dimensions and Constraints control the part size
  • Changing a Dimension or a Constraint changes the
    part shape
  • Feature location is controlled by dimensions

5
CAD/CAM/CAE (cont.)
  • Example of parametric modeling

Original Configuration
Change Dimension, the part shape changes. All
other dimensions stay the same.
