How do you identify a gifted learner?   In
general, the gifted child achieves through
natural ability and quick thinking, whereas, a
high achiever succeeds through effort and
concentration.

  • There is also a difference between low achievers
    and gifted underachievers. In general, a gifted
    student fails to do the work because of lack of
    motivation whereas a low achiever has difficulty
    comprehending the work.
  • IT IS IMPORTANT IN BOTH CASES TO RECOGNISE THE
    DIFFERENCE!!

Implications For Curriculum Design
  • So you have found yourself with a gifted or
    talented pupil.
  • What do you do to help this student fulfil his or
    her potential?
  • In the following we have outlined a course of
    action that is logical and easy to implement.

FIRST
  • Teachers need to modify curriculum in terms of
    abstractness, complexity, variety, organization
    and economy.

SECOND
  • This curriculum modification is called
    Differentiated Curriculum and involves 3 steps
  • Determine the specific needs of an individual
    student or a group of students,
  • Determine how to change curriculum to meet
    specific needs,
  • Negotiate the learning experiences and curriculum
    modifications with the student/ students.

THIRD
  • There are essentially 8 aspects to look at
    with-in the topic of differentiated curriculum.
  •        Appropriate speed,
  •        Cognitive processes,
  •        Enrichment and extension
  •        Personal experience or autonomy,
  •        Multiple intelligences,
  •        Deductive thinking,
  •        Social change,
  •        Career and vocational education.

  •   Liase with a tertiary institution.
