Aim of this presentation
  • To provide some information about the National
    Office for suicide prevention
  • Give some advise on responding to those in crisis
  • List local supports in the North East

    National Strategy for Action on Suicide
    Prevention.
  • Consultation with statutory and non statutory
    organisations working in the area of suicide
    prevention, bereavement support and deliberate
    self harm.
  • Ensure coordination of suicide prevention efforts
    in Ireland.

Your Mental Health Awareness Campaign
  • The 'Your Mental Health' Public Awareness
    Campaign was launched in Oct 07. The campaign
    aims to increase awareness and understanding of
    mental health in Ireland.
  • The first phase of the campaign was aimed at the
    general population. The second phase which will
    be launched later this year will target the youth
    sector.

Training Development
  • SafeTALK is half day training for community
    groups, to enable participants identify the signs
    of a person with thoughts of suicide and know how
    to support with them.
  • ASIST is a two-day skills based course
    which trains participants to recognise and
    respond to a suicidal risk. The course provides
    opportunities to learn what a person at risk
    needs from others in order to keep safe and get
    further help.

Bereavement Support
  • Following completion of the Review of General
    Bereavement Support Service in 2008. The NOSP
    launched two bereavement support publications.

Concerned About Suicide
  • The Warning Signs
  • Most people who feel suicidal dont really want
    to die, they just want an end to their pain.
    Listed below are some of the signs which may
    indicate that someone is thinking of taking their
    life
  • A suicide attempt or act of self-harm
  • Expressing suicidal thoughts
  • Preoccupation with death
  • Depression
  • Becoming isolated
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Drug abuse
  • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour
  • Making final arrangements, e.g. giving away
    possessions (such as books, CDs, DVDs)

  • Associated Risk Factors
  • Access to a method of suicide, e.g. medication,
    firearms
  • Loss of someone close (such as a friend or family
    member)
  • Relationship break-up
  • Impulsiveness, recklessness and risk taking
    behaviour
  • Alcohol / drug abuse

  • Offer support and let them know you care.
  • Say something like
  • Im worried about you and I want to help
  • Whats up? Im very worried about you
  • Whatevers bothering you we will get through
    this together
  • Ask the Question
  • Dont be afraid to discuss suicide asking about
    it wont put the idea in peoples heads
  • Do you feel like harming yourself?
  • Do you feel like ending your life?
  • Are you so down that you just want to end it
    all?
