Objectives - HTAWS
  • Quantify the ability of the HTAWS to reduce
incidents of Controlled Flight into Terrain
    (CFIT)
  • Develop a test plan for the evaluation of the use
of helicopter TAWS in day VFR operations
  • Acquire access to TAWS-equipped helicopters
  • Collect data from flight evaluation of the TAWS
    in various operational conditions
  • Analyze the operational use of HTAWS for EMS ops
  • Make preliminary recommendations for applications
and training of HTAWS for EMS operators

5
Objectives - EVS
  • Gather data to identify obstructions using EVS,
    during all phases of flight
  • Quantify an individuals ability to identify the
same objects and/or terrain with the unaided eye
  • Analyze the operational use of EVS Systems for
    EMS operations
  • Make preliminary recommendations for applications
and training of EVS for EMS operators

6
Grant Modification
  • Helicopter Operations Monitoring Program (HOMP)
  • Appareo Systems ALERTS
  • UND Schweizer 300 and later Bell 206
  • All UND helicopters will be ALERTS equipped
  • Reduction of flight events outside of preset
limitations considered the boundaries of safety

ALERTS What Weve Learned So Far(In a Training
Environment)
  • Originally designed for operational use
  • Increasing training use
  • Fort Rucker, Bristow Academy, UND, Bell
  • Learning curve associated w/new technology
    (UND)
  • Takes a while to gain acceptance and use

Grant Modification
  • Helicopter TAWS scenario based testing using
    flight training devices (FTDs)
  • Recreate accidents from the NTSB database

Scenarios/Routes
  • NTSB accidents/incidents
  • Have to be difficult enough to see if the HTAWS
    will result in an improvement
  • Some routes may have no obstructions, obstacles,
    or terrain
  • Pilots will fly the routes with/without HTAWS
