A Brief Introduction
  • The FLC was formally chartered by Congress under
    the Federal Technology Transfer Act
  • The FLC is composed of technology transfer
    professionals from more than 700 federal
    laboratories, their respective agencies, and
    affiliated organizations
  • 18 departments and agencies participate,
    conducting 90 billion in RD annually and
    employing over 100,000 scientists and engineers
  • Mid Atlantic Region encompasses Maryland,
    Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia and
    Pennsylvania.

Initiatives in the Mid-Atlantic Region
  • Education
  • Increased outreach and visibility
  • Establishment of sub-regions within the region
  • Sector based regional network initiatives
  • Fostering technology based economic initiatives
  • Cross pollination, co-sponsorship with other
    professional associations, regional economic
    development initiatives

Regional Networks
  • Sustain existing and foster new region economic
    initiatives involving the FLC, including but not
    limited to northeast PA Washington Metro
    Maryland Eastern Shore West Virginia and
    southeast Virginia, Philadelphia and Delaware.
  • An example relevant to Montgomery County
    Biosciences Task Force is the upcoming
    Bioinformatics Conference in February 2009.
  • Another example is FedTechNet initiated by MONTCO
  • Support for FLC Mid-Atlantic Region Annual
    Conference
  • Provide a forum for networking among government
    tech transfer professionals, academia, and
    industry partners.
  • Encourage the attendance of companies, and
    academics in order to foster collaboration among
    all parties.

Outreach and Visibility
  • Outreach activities in support of region network
    initiatives, and other efforts such as
    involvement and co-sponsorship with other
    professional groups to enhance the visibility of
    the FLC Mid-Atlantic Region by expanding member
    involvement in this effort
  • Co-sponsorship with Maryland Chapter of LES for a
    Cyber-intelligence Workshop
  • Use of Federal facilities, co-sponsorship, and
    presentations (NASA, NIH) for professional
    association meetings, e.g., LES, Post Doc
    Conference
  • Develop social networking opportunities to
    enhance current and new FLC member interaction
    with their counterparts in companies,
    universities and economic development
    organizations.
  • Fostering interactions in an informal setting

Education
  • Providing an educational series exploring
    different facets of government technology
    transfer, e.g., the different considerations/provi
    sions in a government license.
  • Ideally have it available year round
  • Small focused workshops on government technology
    transfer topics
  • Current issues in tech transfer panels with
    representatives from academia, industry,
    government and economic development
