Why get Involved?
  • The Principal Learning qualification has been
    described as having the potential for becoming
  • the qualifications of choice for young people
  • new and contemporary context for learning
  • a new choice combination of theoretical and
    applied
  • Valued by Employers and other institutions

Why get Involved?
  • The reason the school and I became involved
    was that we saw this new qualification as having
    the potential to fulfill our aims of
  • Providing students with the life skills and
    qualities demanded of living in these exponential
    times.
  • As Karl Fish states in his powerful
    presentation Shift Happens
  • We are currently preparing students for jobs
    that dont yet exist
  • using technologies that havent been invented
  • in order to solve problems we dont even know are
    problems yet.

Background
  • The Chorley South Ribble Consortium is a
    large consortium consisting of some 21
    educational establishments including an FE
    college.
  • Pilot Model
  • Delivery of the Level 2 Principal Learning is
    delivered at Leyland St Marys in partnership
    with Runshaw FE College staff

Transport
  • As the schools in the consortium are well spread
    out with some in rural locations, transport is an
    issue which could have proved difficult.
  • Our solution to this problem is the geographical
    position of the Lead Centre Leyland St Marys
    which is located in close proximity to the local
    FE College and large Tesco store. This allows us
    to utilise the already established and extensive
    transport network of the college and public
    transport to the shopping centre.

Principal Learning

  • Aim to raise awareness of the employment sectors
    within the line of learning being studied and
    develop relevant knowledge, skills and
    understanding.
  • At least half the Principal Learning should be
    practical learning set in a work related context.
  • Example -
  • Higher Diploma in Engineering Principal Learning
    (Level 2) comprises eight units 6 x 60 GLH and
    2 x 30 GLH. Seven units are internally assessed
    and one is externally assessed. Topics covered
    include
  • - Exploring the Engineering World
  • - Investigating Engineering Design
  • - Engineering Applications of Computers
  • - Producing Engineering Solutions
  • - Electrical and Electronic Circuits and Systems
  • - Application of Manufacturing Techniques
  • - Applications of Maintenance Techniques
  • - Exploring Engineering Innovation, Enterprise
    and Technological Advancements

New Ways of Working
  • The Chorley South Ribble Consortium is one
    of five national centres chosen as exemplar
    models for supporting existing and future
    consortia.

Methodology

  • The Principal Learning is delivered not as
    individual units but through projects,
    assignments and case studies which transcend the
    individual units.
  • Evidence is cherry picked from these projects,
    assignments and case studies and placed in
    e-portfolios relevant to the Principal Learning
    Units.

Engineering Diploma VLE

  • Using the latest 1.9 version of the Moodle we
    have developed a Virtual Learning Environment
    specific to the Diploma Engineering course.

Communication

  • The VLE allows all stakeholders including the
    home school and parents to access pupil records
    at any time.
  • Pupils can access resources and specialist
    support from anywhere via the internet.
  • Teaching staff can communicate with pupils at any
    time.
  • Teaching staff can access specialist support from
    colleagues and industrial partners.
  • Attendance and behaviour can be monitored via
    live Googlemail.com register.

Communication

  • We use Google Docs for online registering. This
    is a free service that allows the home school to
    monitor the attendance and attitude to learning
    of the pupils.

The Google docs register allows instant
communication with home school over attendance
and ATL (Attitude To Learning).

Support for Learning

  • Pupils can access resources and progress at a
    pace which suits their ability.
  • If pupil is absent they will be able to access
    work and support from home.
  • If the specialist teacher is absent effective
    learning can still take place using the Moodle
    resources.
  • Pupils can access specialist support and
    resources from our industrial partners.
  • Online self-assessments peer assessments and
    teacher assessments.
  • Individual e-portfolios of evidence will ensure
    all work is secure and all aspects of each unit
    are covered.

  • The on-line assessment matrix maps assessment
    opportunities and allows pupils to view
    assessment criteria for each unit, sub-unit and
    band level.

  • More detailed assessment criteria are also
    available for each sub-level.

Detailed breakdown of assessment criteria
for each sub-unit. This allows pupils and staff
to standardise assessments and set individual
targets.

  • Assessment evidence is submitted into individual
    e-portfolios.

Stage 1. Pupils submit evidence for selected
unit. For example this unit is unit one
sublevel 1.2 job opportunities

Stage 2. All submitted work can be accessed from
one source within the VLE. Pupils can access
their own work and modify if submitted in draft
form.
Stage 3. Formative and summative assessments can
take place. Pupils can access ipsative
referenced targets. Home school can monitor
individual Pupil progress

Pilot Model

  • September 2008 Higher level (Level 2) Engineering
    Diploma has been delivered to one group of 16
    pupils at Leyland St Marys.
  • The course has been delivered by Staff from
    Leyland St Marys and Runshaw
  • This model has ensured that the quality of
    delivery will be standardised across the
    consortium ready for delivery to pupils from all
    schools from September 2009
  • September 2010 Runshaw will offer the Advanced
    Diploma (level 3)

Student Voice
SRC
  • Student voice is an important part of our
    delivery model.
  • It allows pupils to take responsibility for their
    learning and be involved in planning their own
    learning.
  • The students have an elected representative and
    deputy who communicate issues to the staff and
    vice versa.
