- This assignment is designed to draw upon a
students inquisitive nature in solving for the
unknown. Students will assume roles in
discovering the true nature of a piece of art-
the very existence of which is still unknown to
this day. If successful- students should derive
pleasure from the unusual twist- found at the end
of their journey.

9Introduction
- The Director for a famous museum has been
offered a chance to buy a famous painting by the
Dutch painter- Jan Vermeer. The seller wishes to
remain anonymous. Vermeer did not paint many
works in his lifetime. It is important that you
authenticate the painting. Is it realor a fake?
10Mission
- The Director will organize a committee of highly
trained specialists to authenticate the painting.
The Director will interview many candidates for
the committee. Each candidate will need to prove
his or her value to the committee by providing a
detailed description of what he or she does. The
candidate will also need to convince the curator
why he or she is the right person for the job.
11Important Background Information
- The seller of the painting lives in Holland, but
wishes to remain anonymouswhy? - The committee will travel to Holland, not only
to meet with the seller representative but also
to research the history of the artist and the
painting. - The museum is willing to pay a large sum of money
to purchase this painting, provided it is the
real thing.

- The Director (teacher) will divide the class in
groups of four. - Director will assign roles to each of the four
students. - Director will read final reports and hire a
committee. - The Director will be looking for the following
