Activity 1 Creative Writing-Summer

• In your last class, you met in groups to discuss
  the use of connotative vocabulary in the essay
  Summer (Vocabulary Expansion-Part I).
• In Part II, each group had to write a paragraph
  that continued the story of Summer in different
  time frames.

• If your group did not have the opportunity to
  type and e-mail the continuation, this is the
  time to do so. Print 2 copies of the
  continuation keep one and attach the other to
  the colored paper. Give this to the lab
  coordinator. Also, e-mail it as an attachment to
  me at ssantiago_at_email.pucpr.edu.

Activity 2 Finding the Main Idea

• In order to improve your reading comprehension
  skills, you must read closely. As you read, you
  must put together the ideas stated in each
  sentence, realizing that together these sentences
  are leading up to one principal thought that as a
  paragraph they want to convey.

• In the same way, each paragraph conveys a central
  idea that together with the other paragraphs in
  the selection, give us the principal message (or
  central theme) of that selection.

• Today you will read and do exercises that will
  help you find the main idea. First you will read
  about finding the topic, and then you will read
  about the main idea.
• To do this, you will access two websites. The
  first is called The Reading Room. The second is
  Reading Resources.

• When you access this site, first click on the
  link Getting Started The Directions.
• Next click on Reading Skills Finding the Main
  Idea.
• Finally, go to Reading Practice and choose from
  the review exercises.
• Now go to this address

• In this site, you will read more about finding
  the main idea.
• Click first on Topics. Write down your answers as
  you work through the exercise. Check with the
  Answer Key at the bottom of the page.
• Then click on Main Ideas. Read and do the
  exercises.

Assignment

• For our next class, remember that you will hand
  in Reading Reaction 3 based on A Letter to God.
• Read about topics and main ideas in STCR on pages
  146-148 and pages 158-161 .
