Title: Wireless Communications and ITS The Capital District Advanced Traveler Information Systems and Traff

1
Wireless Communications and ITS The Capital
District Advanced Traveler Information Systems
and Traffic Incident Management Systems
  • Professors G.F. List
  • and W.A. Wallace
  • Co-Principal Investigators
  • Earl Rusty Lee and Alix Demers
  • Project Managers
  • Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • Center for Infrastructure and Transportation
    Studies

2
What is the project?
  • Evaluate various methods to collect, process and
    distribute real-time travel information
  • Serve highway users, educational institutions,
and major private developments in the existing
Route 4 and TMC transportation corridors
  • Duration March 2003 Jan 2005
  • Testbed established as part of the I-90 connector
    to serve as research area

(No Transcript)
5
Information Exchange
  • Vehicle sends location and notification of
    passing monuments
  • Processed into link speeds
  • Returned to vehicle
  • Re-route or not
  • End of trip data

6
The Testbed Area
  • Congested Links
  • Multiple Peaks (classes)
  • Techy travelers
  • Path Choices
  • Freeways and signalized arterials
  • Partially Instrumented
  • Loops, video, signal detectors

7
The Overall Network
  • 400 nodes
  • More than 800 links
  • 28 Zones
  • 16 Signalized intersections (mostly actuated
    signals)

8
Who is involved?
  • Academic partners
  • Rensselaer, Cornell University, Polytechnic
University and CUBRC (CALSPAN / University of
    Buffalo Research Center)
  • Public Partners
  • FHWA, NYSDOT, CDTC, Rensselaer County Economic
    and Community Development, Hudson Valley
    Community College, CDTA
  • Corporate partners
  • ALK Technologies, Inc., Annese and Associates,
    Consensus Systems Technologies, Sprint

9
Surveys
  • North Greenbush Households (187 of 997)
  • HVCC Staff (237 of 1058)
  • HVCC Students (1091 of 9575)
  • Tech Park Employees (492 of 2500)
  • Commercial Operators - Mabey Moving Garelick
    Farms UPS, CDTA, etc.

10
Preliminary Results
  • Consistent with national observations
  • Want to Know
  • Congestion
  • Incidents / Construction
  • Weather
  • Alternative routes
  • How they Get
  • Commercial Radio
  • Observations
  • TV
  • VMS
  • HAR
  • Cell Phone / Other drivers
  • Internet

11
What Are the Data Sources?
  • Roadside Point visibility
  • Intrusive or Non-intrusive
  • Fixed location, anonymous, expensive
  • Vehicle tags Link Visibility
  • Better, but gaps in visibility of network
  • Vehicle probes Network visibility
  • Use existing infrastructure and off the shelf
    systems wide area visibility
  • Two way system

12
How Do You Get the Information Out?
13
Design of the Experiments
  • Vary of vehicles in system that are probe cars
  • Compare probe car average to all vehicle average
  • Select Participants to get high density coverage
    on links
  • Based on
  • O D matrix estimation
  • Survey of potential participants
  • Optimization of distributions of paths used

14
Expected Information Quality from Probes
  • Freeways
  • Estimate within 5-10 of actual with 90-95
    confidence
  • 2-3 probes each 5 min
  • Probe density at least 1
  • Arterials
  • Travel time estimate within 10-15 of actual with
    85-90 confidence
  • 7 probes cross link each 5 min
  • Probe density 10

15
Concerns / Lessons Learned
  • User needs
  • Pre and post project
  • Technology Myths
  • US Wireless
  • GPS Cell Phones
  • Emerging Technology
  • Air Sage
  • DSRC
  • Zip Dash
  • Privacy
  • Less of an issue when information has greater
    value

16
Whats Next
  • Field Tests (4 months)
  • Data Analysis
  • Travel Time Estimation Methods
  • Path Choice Analysis
  • Study Use Practices
  • Study Network Performance

17
Follow-On Project
  • Traffic Incident Management
  • Started this summer
  • CAD Integration
  • TMC , 2 county dispatch centers, Thruway, City of
    Albany / Capitol police, CDTA
  • Experimentation with Incident Management process
  • Technologies and techniques from ATIS for
    detection and management
